Tamim Iqbal has been elected unopposed as President of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), with the outcome confirmed after the BCB Election Commission completed the board formation process in Mirpur. After emerging as the highest vote-getter in the board elections, Tamim was nominated for the President’s position and secured the role unopposed when no other director challenged his nomination. The former Bangladesh Captain became the board’s 21st President, while Fahim Sinha was appointed Vice President.

His appointment follows a dominant performance in the elections, where he emerged as the highest vote-getter among candidates contesting for director positions. The vote completed the formation of a 25-member board that will oversee Bangladesh cricket’s administration, governance and strategic direction over the coming years.

Strong mandate from the cricket community

Tamim topped the Category 2 election for Dhaka-based club representatives, receiving 73 votes and finishing ahead of a field of 16 candidates competing for 12 director positions. The result underlined the level of support he enjoyed among councillors and paved the way for his elevation to the board’s top role.

Sayeed Ibrahim Ahmed and Israfil Khosru each secured 72 votes, while Masuduzzaman received 70. Yasir Mohammad Faisal Ashik finished with 68 votes, followed by Fahim Sinha and Shanian Taneem Navin on 66 votes apiece. Sakeef Ahmed Salam, Asif Rabbani, Mirza Yasir Abbas, Md Rafiqul Islam Babu and Prof Dr Sarker Mahbub Ahmed Shamim also secured places on the board.

The election process also included contests in Khulna and Barishal, while eight directors had already been elected unopposed before polling took place. Two additional directors nominated through the National Sports Council completed the 25-member structure.

A presidency built on responsibility

Tamim assumes office at a significant moment for Bangladesh cricket after previously serving on the ad-hoc committee appointed to oversee cricket operations and conduct elections following changes to the board’s leadership earlier this year.

Speaking during his first press conference after being elected President, Tamim said: “The feeling is responsibility. I do not have any extra feeling that I have become something big. I think it is a massive responsibility. And since I have talked about these things many times before, I said I want to do this, I want to do that. And this is the time where I prove myself to everyone.”

The former opener indicated that delivering on long-discussed objectives would be a priority as he transitions from player to administrator. His presidency begins with expectations around governance, development programmes and the long-term growth of the game across Bangladesh.

Focusing the board on cricket

The composition of the new board has attracted scrutiny in some quarters, particularly regarding the backgrounds of several directors. Tamim made clear that he wants the board’s work to be judged by its contribution to the sport rather than by individual affiliations.

In the same press conference, he added: “Those who have been elected — many of them I am meeting for the first time as well — but what I clearly said in our meeting is this: whatever your personal identity may be, we have only one responsibility, and because of that responsibility we are sitting here today, and that is to serve Bangladesh cricket and take Bangladesh cricket forward.”

Bangladesh cricket’s standing internationally was another theme raised during the discussion. Tamim acknowledged the scale of the challenge facing the board as it seeks to strengthen confidence in the administration of the sport.

“We all have to keep one thing in mind, which is that the reputation damage that Bangladesh cricket has suffered worldwide, I alone cannot fix this. I will need everyone’s support here.”

He also addressed the labels attached to the board by some observers.

“Yes, many kinds of tags are being given. That is definitely their personal opinion. Let’s see, maybe we can do something beyond ‘father’s blessing’ and actually do cricket’s blessing in the future.”

High-performance centre among key ambitions

Infrastructure development appears set to become one of the defining projects of Tamim’s presidency. A proposed high-performance centre in Purbachal remains among the most ambitious initiatives under consideration by the board.

Tamim said: “About the high-performance centre, yes, it is probably my biggest dream.”

The project has already undergone significant planning work, although Tamim indicated changes are being considered before construction moves forward.

“A small update: a few years ago a company called Populous designed it, including the stadium and high-performance centre. When I took charge, I saw the design. I did not like it very much. We have already paid a large amount of money, and some payments are still pending. I have already had a Zoom meeting with them, with the CEO and others, and I invited them to come to Bangladesh so we can redesign it.”

The proposed facility would represent one of the largest infrastructure investments undertaken by the board in recent years and would require support from multiple stakeholders.

“Because the way I think, or the dreams I have, probably do not fit what was designed. So we are working on redesigning it and hopefully we can start this in Purbachal. The whole project requires a lot of money, so we will need strong government support. I have already started initial discussions. Even when I met the finance minister, I mentioned it. He was very positive and asked for details. We will formally apply. And National Sports Council is also involved, so we will go through them. It is a big dream and I hope I can fulfil it.”

Governance and transparency on the agenda

Alongside infrastructure plans, Tamim indicated that governance reforms could also be discussed during his tenure. Suggestions relating to the BCB constitution are expected to be reviewed through the board’s formal processes.

He noted: “There are a lot of things, loopholes, and if we all agree together, we will discuss them in the next Annual General Meeting.”

Transparency and accountability were also highlighted as priorities for the new administration.

“I hope we can be as transparent as possible. Because I am sure I do not want any of my board members to do anything that makes us controversial. From my side and from the whole board’s side, we can say we will try to act with full honesty.”

With a strong electoral mandate, a newly formed board and a four-year term ahead, Tamim now begins the task of translating his vision for Bangladesh cricket into tangible results both on and off the field.
