Fresh hope has emerged that India will travel to Bangladesh for the scheduled white-ball series in September, with a report by Cricbuzz journalist Atif Azam indicating that recent geopolitical developments have increased optimism that the tour could still go ahead despite months of uncertainty.
Bangladesh Cricket Board President Tamim Iqbal struck a similarly optimistic tone while speaking to reporters on Wednesday, although he acknowledged that discussions are still ongoing.
“Unfortunately, I do not have any news regarding the India series. From our side, we are in communication with the BCCI and we are trying. I hope they will come,” Tamim said.
Optimism grows over September tour
India are scheduled to tour Bangladesh for three One-Day Internationals and three Twenty20 Internationals after the series was rescheduled from its original 2025 window to September 2026 following discussions between the two boards over scheduling commitments.
The report says optimism has grown following India’s invitation to Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman to attend the upcoming BRICS Summit. However, the series remains dependent on developments beyond the control of the two cricket boards, including decisions at government level.
BCB continues discussions with BCCI
Tamim said hosting India would be a major occasion for Bangladesh cricket and reiterated that the Bangladesh Cricket Board continues to do everything possible to help ensure the series takes place.
“Bangladesh’s series against India, the excitement is at a different level, I’m sure from journalists, from fans, cricketers, everyone,” he said.
Tamim also sought to reassure all stakeholders over Bangladesh’s readiness to host the series while outlining the efforts being made by the Bangladesh Cricket Board.
“Bangladesh is an extremely safe country, and I am very hopeful that they will come. Whatever steps need to be taken from our side, we are trying. But one thing we all need to understand — I am the BCB president, and there is also a line that I should never cross. So from my position, whatever is possible to do within my responsibility, I am talking to people, I am trying to tell them what advantages there are with the India series and all those things,” he stated.
Decision expected soon
He also indicated that clarity over the proposed tour could arrive in the near future.
“But I think the discussions we have had have been very positive. They too have to make a decision. Maybe very soon we will know whether the series is happening and we will be able to inform you,” he concluded.
A decision on whether the September series proceeds is expected in the coming weeks, with both cricket boards continuing discussions as they work towards finalising the tour.
