From Black Caps to the thistle

Former New Zealand international Tom Bruce has committed his future to Scotland and is in line to make his debut in the upcoming ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup League 2 fixtures against Canada and Namibia. The 34-year-old qualifies through his Edinburgh-born father and previously featured for Scotland’s development team in 2016 before making his New Zealand debut the following year.

Bruce, who captained Central Districts and represented the Black Caps in 17 T20Is between 2017 and 2020, will now join a Scotland squad that sits third in the League 2 table, aiming to close the gap on the leaders.

In a statement released by Cricket Scotland, Bruce said:

“There’s a long Scottish history within my family and I know they will be incredibly proud that I am representing Scotland on the world stage. I’ve been fortunate enough to play for New Zealand five years ago, and I want to continue to showcase my skills on the world stage, and help the Scotland team achieve success, as I know the group is capable of achieving success and continuing to grow as a team.”

Reunion with familiar faces

Bruce’s previous stint in the Scotland set-up has made this transition a return of sorts.

“I was involved briefly in the set-up back in 2016, and it was an awesome experience. I played alongside and against a lot of the current group of Scotland players, and it’s been great following their development through the years and I’m looking forward to linking up with them again,” Bruce said.

With a career strike rate above 140 in domestic T20 cricket and significant experience in both the Super Smash and international cricket, Bruce adds depth to Scotland’s top order.

“For me, I want to help the team in any way shape or form to play some consistent quality cricket and ultimately help get us to a World Cup,” he added.

Scotland welcome experienced reinforcements

Steve Snell, Cricket Scotland’s head of performance, praised the signing and highlighted Bruce’s heritage and experience:

“He has had a very successful career in New Zealand cricket, but he is proud of his Scottish heritage and we’ve been in conversations with him for some time about committing to playing for Scotland.”

“He’s excited to get involved and sees a huge level of opportunity for both him and the team moving forward.”

The squad for the Canada series also sees the return of Josh Davey, last seen in the 2022 T20 World Cup.

“It’s excellent to have Josh Davey back, as he’s been unavailable to us for some time due to his county commitments. We’ve remained in constant dialogue with Josh during that time and he’s always expressed his desire to continue to play for Scotland,” Snell said.

Head coach on Bruce’s impact

Scotland men’s head coach Doug Watson believes Bruce’s arrival will strengthen both the playing XI and the dressing room culture:

“I’m very excited about Tom joining the group, not only is he a world-class cricketer, he brings a whole range of experience, he’s played a lot of 50-over and T20 cricket.”

“He’s going to add massive value both on the field and off the field in the years ahead, and I’m looking forward to getting him amongst the group, and I’m sure he’ll fit in perfectly well.”

Road ahead in Canada

Scotland will play four ODIs in King City, Ontario between 29 August and 6 September, facing Canada and Namibia. It will be their first international outing since missing out on qualification for the T20 World Cup through the European qualifiers. With Bruce now in the fold and Davey returning, Scotland will aim to solidify their League 2 standing — and build momentum toward the ultimate goal: World Cup qualification.
