As the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) gears up for its Annual General Meeting (AGM) on September 28, all indicators point toward a seamless, uncontested leadership transition. The post of BCCI president — vacated after Roger Binny turned 70 — is expected to be filled without a formal election, as top officials and stakeholders seem to favour a unanimous appointment process.
In an exclusive interview with NDTV, IPL Chairman Arun Dhumal said,
“The nominations would start and you will get to know who is becoming. I don’t think there will be any elections. It would be done unanimously.”
Dhumal further elaborated on the process:
“So, let the members sit and take a call. As of now, everyone has to give their representation. Once that list is out, we will be able to make out who will be taking what position.”
Kiran More in Contention for President Role
According to a report by NDTV, former India wicketkeeper and ex-chief selector Kiran More is being considered as the frontrunner to replace Roger Binny as BCCI President. The report also indicates that state associations are expected to arrive at a unanimous decision, echoing Dhumal’s remarks.
Should More assume office, it would mark the continuation of a trend of former Indian cricketers holding the BCCI’s top post — following Sourav Ganguly (2019–22) and Roger Binny (2022–2025).
Ganguly and Harbhajan Return to BCCI Fold
According to the draft electoral roll issued by BCCI Electoral Officer A.K. Jyoti, former India captain Sourav Ganguly has been named as the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) representative for the AGM. Meanwhile, Indian Express reports that Harbhajan Singh has been elected as the Punjab Cricket Association’s (PCA) nominee — his first BCCI AGM appearance as a representative.
Sources suggest Harbhajan is also being considered for an office-bearer role or a position in the IPL Governing Council, indicating the BCCI’s continued preference for involving former players in administrative affairs.
MCA and Other State Representatives Confirmed
RevSportz reported that Ajinkya Naik, President of the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA), was the unanimous choice to represent the body at the AGM. However, the association might eventually be represented by Vice-President Sanjay Naik due to potential travel plans of Naik senior.
As per the draft roll, Raghuram Bhatt will represent the Karnataka State Cricket Association, Jaydev Shah for Saurashtra Cricket Association, and Mithun Manhas for the Jammu and Kashmir Cricket Association.
Other confirmed representatives include:
- Arun Dhumal for Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association
- Rajeev Shukla for Uttar Pradesh Cricket Association
- Rohan Gauns Dessai for Goa Cricket Association
- Prabhtej Singh Bhatia for Chhattisgarh State Cricket Sangh
Sachin Tendulkar Shuts Down Speculation
Amid swirling rumours about his potential candidacy, Sachin Tendulkar’s management issued an official denial. In a statement, SRT Sports Management Pvt Ltd clarified:
“It has come to our attention that certain reports and rumours have been circulating regarding Mr. Sachin Tendulkar being considered, or nominated, for the position of President of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).”
They further added:
“We wish to categorically state that no such development has taken place. We urge all concerned to refrain from giving credence to unfounded speculations.”
Looking Ahead
While elections are technically scheduled, the consensus-driven nature of the process, combined with the readiness of several experienced former cricketers to take up key posts, indicates that a new leadership lineup will be finalized without contest. The AGM also aligns with the final of the 2025 Asia Cup in Dubai, possibly limiting the presence of top BCCI brass at the match — underscoring the administrative priority of the upcoming meeting.
