Worcestershire County Cricket Club has confirmed the signing of Pakistan international leg-spinner Usama Mir on a three-year T20 contract, marking a strategic move to add international experience to their bowling lineup while planning long-term roster flexibility.

The 29-year-old Mir will join Worcestershire as an overseas player for the 2026 season, before qualifying as a homegrown player from 2027 onwards under ECB residency regulations. This shift allows Worcestershire to maximize their overseas slot from year two while keeping a top-quality international spinner in the squad.

Usama Mir brings global T20 experience to Worcestershire

Mir has represented Pakistan in all formats and built a strong T20 résumé with appearances in top leagues including the Big Bash League, Pakistan Super League, and The Hundred. Known for his wicket-taking ability and consistent control, his signing significantly bolsters Worcestershire’s spin attack heading into future campaigns.

Worcestershire CEO Ashley Giles praised the long-term value of the deal:

“We’re thrilled to welcome Usama to Worcestershire. He’s a high-calibre cricketer with the skills and temperament to make a real impact at this level.

“His ability to transition into a homegrown player from 2027 gives us great flexibility in squad planning and shows our commitment to building a competitive team for the long term.”

Strategic move for a competitive and balanced squad

The deal underscores Worcestershire’s ambition to combine international talent with domestic development. By committing to Mir over a three-year horizon, the club is signalling intent to maintain a strong spin-bowling core while navigating the ECB’s eligibility framework smartly.

Head Coach Alan Richardson echoed the club’s excitement:

“It’s huge for Worcestershire. The club has a very proud history and a rich history of quality overseas signings.

“I am looking forward to seeing Usama get to work. The signing underlines our intent to strengthen the squad with international quality while we continue to invest in growth through our youth and pathway system.”

The signing positions Worcestershire well for the 2026 Vitality Blast and beyond, as they aim to build a squad that blends local development with global experience.
