A new selection debate is rapidly gaining traction across Indian cricket—and at the center of it is 15-year-old sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, whose explosive performances in IPL 2026 have prompted calls for an immediate India call-up.
Former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan has led the charge, urging selectors and decision-makers to fast-track the teenager into the national setup.
Bumrah moment triggers selection push
Sooryavanshi’s latest statement performance came against Jasprit Bumrah—widely regarded as one of the best white-ball bowlers in the world, if not the single best—during Rajasthan Royals’ clash with Mumbai Indians.
The 15-year-old attacked Bumrah from the outset, launching him for a six off his very first delivery in a fearless display that quickly became one of the defining moments of the IPL season.
“The way Jasprit Bumrah had no plans visible, the way he moved to the slower one — Vaibhav Suryavanshi has forced even Bumrah to think. In white-ball cricket, India has not found a bowler like Bumrah. He is a GOAT. And this feat has been achieved against him,” Irfan said on his YouTube channel, as quoted by the Indian Express.
The duel has become symbolic of Sooryavanshi’s rise—an emerging batter not just surviving, but dictating terms against elite international bowlers.
Fearless approach sets him apart
What has stood out most to observers is not just Sooryavanshi’s output, but his mindset—something Pathan believes is rare even among seasoned professionals.
“Whatever bowler comes in front, he does not watch his action, does not think too much. He only watches the ball. If he gets it, he hits it. This thinking makes him very special,” Pathan said.
That clarity of approach has translated into remarkable numbers. In a rain-shortened 11-over contest, Sooryavanshi smashed 39 off just 14 balls, striking at nearly 280 while peppering the boundary with sixes.
Across IPL 2026, he has consistently delivered high-impact innings for Rajasthan Royals, further amplifying calls for elevation to international cricket.
‘Destiny’s child’: Pathan calls for immediate India cap
Pathan has gone a step further than praise—making a direct appeal to selectors, including chairman Ajit Agarkar, to act quickly.
“Sooryavanshi is a destiny’s child. What he is doing at 15 in white-ball cricket – I don’t think we have ever seen anyone do this. Don’t make this boy wait too long. Give him the Indian team cap. Imagine this boy can play 20 years of professional cricket. This is scary for bowlers,” Pathan added.
The argument is gaining traction within the cricket ecosystem, particularly given India’s packed T20 calendar, which offers a relatively low-risk pathway to integrate young talent.
The bigger picture for India’s selectors
For India’s leadership, the decision now centers on timing. While early debuts carry risk, the upside—particularly in T20 cricket—could be transformative.
Sooryavanshi’s case also reflects a broader trend in cricket: the acceleration of elite talent pathways, where franchise leagues increasingly serve as proving grounds for international readiness.
Whether selectors move immediately or adopt a phased approach, one thing is clear—the conversation around Sooryavanshi is no longer about potential, but about when, not if.
