Hobart Hurricanes fans can look forward to seeing home-grown batting talent, Caleb Jewell, in purple for the next two seasons, with the left-hander putting pen to paper with the Hurricanes before the BBL embargo period kicked in.It’s yet another off-season boost for the Hurricanes, with the Tasmanian set to remain a part of the side until at least the end of BBL|13.

With a strong batting line up, Jewell played only 11 of the Hurricanes 15 matches throughout BBL|11, however he still finished the season as his side’s fifth-highest run-scorer.  Jewell amassed 216 runs at a strike rate of 129.34 throughout the tournament, including a top-score of 51 in the Hurricanes’ gutsy nine-run win over the Sydney Thunder at Marvel Stadium.

Jewell, who has now played 30 matches for the club across three seasons, said he was excited to have his BBL future locked in for the medium to short-term.

“I obviously missed out on a contract last season and then had a stint as a replacement player, and then was stoked to be offered a one-year contract for the season just gone,” Jewell said.

“I probably didn’t quite make as many runs as I would’ve liked,” Jewell added upon reflection, “so for me, it’s just great to have the contract side of things locked away so I can fully focus on my batting.”

“Even this far out from next season, we have so many great names locked in on our list already, so I’m really excited to see how the rest of the recruitment goes over the off-season, and then get stuck into it again at the end of the year.”

Cricket Tasmania’s General Manager of High Performance, Simon Insley, said it was great to lock in another home-grown talent on a multi-year deal.

“Caleb has been working really hard to ensure that he is a dangerous batter across all three formats of the game, and we look forward to continue watching his T20 game develop next season, and beyond.”

Jewell joins Tim David, Nathan Ellis, Ben McDermott, Riley Meredith, Joel Paris, Wil Parker, D’Arcy Short and Matthew Wade as Hurricanes currently signed for BBL|12.
