For perhaps the first time in living memory, hundreds of keen young cricketers basked in glorious sunshine and baking heat during a fabulous Schools Week of Cricket in Perth and Edinburgh.

On Wednesday, Perth’s North Inch Park was the venue for more than 200 primary boys and girls to take part in softball action, many of them competing against other schools for the first time. Thursday was the turn of the senior pupils, and as the sun beat down the runs and wickets flowed once more, again with over 200 children taking part.

In the primary school events on Wednesday, St George’s School beat Ardvreck School in the Girls’ final, while Cargilfield School defeated George Watson’s College in the Boys’ competition. Thursday’s senior school action saw Cargilfield School win the Girls’ final against St George’s School, while Robert Gordon’s College were victorious in the Boy’s final against Morrison’s Academy.

On Friday, the hardball cricketers took centre stage in Edinburgh for the inspiresports Scottish Schools Cup Finals. The U18 girls’ final at Fettes saw the hosts defeat George Watson’s College in an exciting final. Merchiston Castle School were victorious in the U18 Boys’ final against Stewart’s Melville College at Myreside, while hosts George Watson’s College lifted the U15 Boys’ trophy after a win over Robert Gordon’s College.

Many congratulations to all who participated across the week in both softball and hardball cricket, and a special well done to all the coaches and volunteers who enabled so many children to have such a fantastic week of cricket. A particular massive thank you from Cricket Scotland must go to coaches Blair Carnegie and Richard Rennie, who ensured the Perth softball extravaganzas on Wednesday and Thursday ran so smoothly, whilst successfully avoiding being frazzled by the heat!
