Eight NSW Blues have been named by the National Selection Panel (NSP) for the Qantas Tour of South Africa, One Day Series against India and in an initial 18-player squad for the ICC 2023 World Cup.

The squad travels to South Africa for three T20 Internationals and five One Day Internationals, then onto India for a three match ODI series followed by the ICC 2023 World Cup.

Sean Abbott, Steve Smith and Adam Zampa will play in the T20 series against South Africa before they are joined by fellow Blues Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, Pat Cummins, David Warner and the uncapped Tanveer Sangha for the ODI matches.

Pat Cummins will join the squad for the ODI series in South Africa to prepare for India as he recovers from a fractured left wrist sustained on the first day of the final Ashes Test match in London.

Chair of Selectors George Bailey said:

“Pat injured his left wrist diving in the field on the first day at The Oval,”

“He has an undisplaced fracture of his left radius which requires six weeks rehabilitation.

“We expect him to join the squad during the South African ODI Series. We view a period of enforced rest for Pat as a positive ahead of this important World Cup campaign.

“There are still a number of games he could play before the World Cup which is more than enough for him to have a strong preparation.”

A provisional World Cup squad of 15 players will be named in early September, with squad finalisation required on September 28.

Bailey said: “This side has been extremely impressive for several years in limited overs cricket. There is an enormous amount of skill and experience in the group which you need in a World Cup.”
