Sydney Sixers all-rounder Sean Abbott has been named by the National Selection Panel (NSP) for the Qantas Tour of South Africa, One Day Series against India and in an initial 18-player squad for the ICC 2023 World Cup.

The squad travels to South Africa for three T20 Internationals and five One Day Internationals, then onto India for a three match ODI series followed by the ICC 2023 World Cup.

Abbott, the KFC BBL’s all-time leader in wickets taken, has been a mainstay for the Sixers for almost a decade and has been in and out of the Australian team for the last few years. With his selection for the South African tour and matches against India the fast bowler is just a step away from locking in a berth for Australia’s ICC 2023 World Cup campaign.

A provisional World Cup squad of 15 players will be named in early September, with squad finalisation required on September 28.

Chair of Selectors George Bailey said: “This side has been extremely impressive for several years in limited overs cricket. There is an enormous amount of skill and experience in the group which you need in a World Cup.”
