The Sydney Sixers have retained the services of young gun Kate Peterson, locking in the New South Wales local for the next two years.

One of the country’s most exciting young fast bowlers, the 20-year-old has proven herself as a force in the field, as well as a reliable option with bat in hand.

Signed by Sydney Thunder as a 17-year-old, Peterson spent three seasons in lime green before making the move across town, joining the Sixers at the start of last summer.

Making 13 appearances in her first season in magenta, the quick collected 11 wickets and five catches, claiming the best strike rate (11.45) of the Sixers’ bowling group last season.

The 20-year-old’s breakout performance came when she rattled through Brisbane Heat’s top-order, collecting 4/17 and picking up the wickets of stars Grace Harris, Georgia Voll, Ellie Johnston, and Laura Harris.

She followed her efforts against the Heat with back-to-back three-wicket hauls, claiming 3/27 against her former side and 3/31 against the Hobart Hurricanes to end the regular season.

Making her first WBBL Final appearance in last year’s decider against the Adelaide Strikers, the right-armer snared the crucial wicket of star, Laura Wolvaardt, removing the world-class opener for just 15.

Recruited by South Australia ahead of the 2021/22 WNCL season, Peterson has excelled in the City of Churches, snaring 17 wickets (including 5/34) at 4.81 in 11 appearances for her state last season.

Speaking about re-signing, Peterson said she couldn’t turn down the opportunity to return to the club.

“I loved my time at the Sixers last year. Although we didn’t get the fairytale ending we were after, it was awesome to be part of such a special group and to be able to achieve what we did.

“I’m really excited for the season ahead and the opportunity to keep learning from some of the biggest names in cricket, like Pez [Ellyse Perry], but also the chance to potentially play alongside some new internationals that might be picked up in the Draft will be awesome.

“I’m really looking forward to getting back out in front of our home crowd at North Sydney Oval, and for the chance to play at the SCG later this season.”

Head of Sydney Sixers, Rachael Haynes said she was delighted to welcome Peterson back this summer.

“Kate is one of the most exciting young talents in the country and we’re thrilled to secure her for the next two seasons. We saw what she’s capable of in the back end of last season.

“Kate is a born-and bred Sydney girl, coming up through the NSW Cricket pathway. She’s a much-loved member of the playing group and we’re looking forward to welcoming her back this summer.

“Our Sixers’ members and fans should be very excited for what’s to come in WBBL|09.”

The Sixers will officially kick off the Weber WBBL|09 season on Thursday, October 19, taking on the Melbourne Stars at North Sydney Oval. Tickets for the entire WBBL|09 season are on sale now.
