Cricket Hong Kong, China are pleased to announce their squad for the upcoming Asian Games 2023, to be held in Hangzhou from 28th September to 8th October 2023.

The squad will depart for Malaysia on Saturday, to take part in the Malaysia T20I Men’s Tri-Nations Cup 2023, where they will face the hosts and Papua New Guinea in two T20Is each. They will then head to Hangzhou for the Asian Games.

“When the Hong Kong Men’s Team last played in the Asian Games, we reached the semifinals where we eventually lost the bronze medal match to Bangladesh. We have every confidence in the squad selected and are looking forward to a successful tournament” said CHK Director of Cricket Robin Gill.

Cricket will be played at the Asian Games for the first time since 2014. The Men’s Tournament consists of 14 teams, with Hong Kong, China grouped together with Cambodia and Japan in Group B. The winners of each of the three groups will proceed to the Quarter Finals, where they will join India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan.

Nizakat Khan, the captain of the Hong Kong, China team, had this to say. “The squad and I are looking forward to playing cricket in Hangzhou! They have built an amazing facility and I expect the cricket competition to be one of the highlights of this Asian Games!”

There are several new faces in the Hong Kong, China squad, due to the qualification requirements for the Asian Games. Akbar Khan, Muhammad Khan, Niaz Ali and 16-year-old Shiv Mathur – fresh off his heroics in the ACC Men’s Under-16 East Zone Cup – will all potentially make their T20I debuts during the tournament.

Head Coach Simon Willis said “It is exciting to see the depth of talent available to us, with several new faces coming through the club and domestic structures. Many of these players are making a return to the squad after having played for Hong Kong earlier in their careers. We’ve got a good mix of youth and experience, and we are excited for the opportunity to make a mark on the global stage.”
