Durban’s Super Giants have finalised their Betway SA20 Season 2 squad with the signing of in-form Proteas batter Tony de Zorzi.

The 26-year-old left-handed batter will head to Kingsmead as a late replacement for Kyle Abbott, who has had to withdraw from the League through injury for a second straight season.

De Zorzi, who was up for grabs during the Season 2 auction, has come to the fore recently with his performances for the national team. A maiden One Day International century in Gqeberha against India – the number one ranked ODI side in the world – in their recently concluded series was followed by 81 runs in Paarl to confirm that his his white-ball game is bang in tune.

Widely regarded as the one of the best upcoming prospects in the Proteas setup, de Zorzi boasts a stellar domestic record with over 3000 runs in First-Class and List A cricket each. He has also notched up a T20 hundred to go with a First-Class triple century which shows his all-round ability with the bat – whether as an opener or elsewhere in the top order.

DSG had a relatively settled batting order last campaign. Quinton de Kock, Kyle Mayers, Matthew Breetzke, Heinrich Klaasen and Wiaan Mulder all had their moments in the middle, but ultimately they missed the Season 1 playoffs because of net run rate. With the addition of West Indies star Nicholas Pooran and now De Zorzi, Lance Klusener and his coaching staff will hope to not leave knockout qualification to such fine margins.

De Zorzi will be in line for his DSG debut on 11 January when they host MI Cape Town in their SA20 opener at Kingsmead Stadium.
