WA Cricket has reaffirmed its commitment to the inclusion and advancement of women and girls as it celebrates International Women’s Day 2024.

International Women’s Day (IWD) is a chance to recognise women’s achievements and to highlight the work that still needs to be done to achieve gender equality in Western Australia.

The IWD 2024 theme is Count Her In: Invest in Women. Accelerate Progress.  The theme emphasises the importance of examining the pathways to greater economic inclusion for women and girls everywhere.

To celebrate, WA Cricket hosted a screening of an iconic movie championing women’s empowerment in sport on the afternoon of Friday 8 March. Staff and players were given a choice of films with the majority voting for Bend It Like Beckham, with the viewing by a short group discussion around the themes of the film.

WA Cricket CEO Christina Matthews will also join industry leaders in delivering the Women of Sport Network IWD Sports Forum on Friday 15 March, attended by WA Cricket staff.

“WA Cricket is proud to stand with Australian Cricket to make this a sport for all, from community grassroots to the international stage,” Ms Matthews said.

“We want every Australian woman and girl to look at cricket and think, there’s a place in that game for me.”

The 2022-23 Australian Cricket Census saw significant growth among women and girls with female participation in Western Australia, increasing by 17% to 6,914, a 19% increase on pre-pandemic registrations.

Senior women’s registered participation increased 12% thanks largely to the Perth Scorchers Women’s League.

The WA Cricket Foundation is working to empower the next generation of young women by building skills and enabling opportunities and pathways through sport.

The Foundation works with girls and young women from diverse backgrounds to build confidence, social connections, a sense of belonging and newfound opportunities that would otherwise be unavailable to them.
