Brevis breakout reignites debate over CSK signing
Dewald Brevis’ explosive form during South Africa’s white-ball tour of Australia has once again pushed the young batter into the spotlight — and reignited discussion around Chennai Super Kings‘ controversial signing of the 21-year-old as an injury replacement during IPL 2025.
The spark? A viral social media post by AB de Villiers calling Brevis’ signing a “masterstroke” — which led to online speculation and even prompted a clarification from CSK about following all IPL rules. Now, de Villiers has addressed the controversy directly on his YouTube channel.
“A lot of teams missed out”
De Villiers made it clear that his comments were never about rule-bending, but about how multiple IPL franchises overlooked a rare talent.

“I purely just wanted to say that a lot of teams missed out, and I think that was the message from me,” de Villiers said.
Brevis went unsold in the IPL 2025 auction but later joined CSK as an injury replacement. The move was questioned after the injured player, Gurjanpreet Singh, was later seen bowling in practice — triggering suggestions that CSK had exploited a loophole. But de Villiers said critics were missing the point entirely.
“People, organisers of the IPL franchises, the owners, whoever, the scouts, I felt got it horribly wrong in that main auction, not picking him up. What a fantastic opportunity they had.”
Missed opportunity for MI, RCB, others
Among the teams de Villiers singled out were Royal Challengers Bengaluru — his former franchise — and Mumbai Indians, where Brevis had previously played.
“I think teams like RCB, obviously, he was at MI before, they decided to let go of him and not get him back,” said de Villiers. “So, big loss I feel for a lot of teams, and he’s showing that now. My tweet was all about, sort of, just showing how capable this guy is, how talented he is.”
With CSK reaping the benefits of Brevis’ breakout performances, de Villiers’ comments add further weight to what many are calling one of the savviest moves of the 2025 IPL season.
No rules were broken, says de Villiers
Clearing up any suggestion of impropriety, de Villiers stated that his original comments were being misinterpreted.
“I also tweeted about him being picked up at the IPL or not being picked up initially, and then getting into CSK’s team because of an injury. I thought maybe some people misunderstood my tweet. It had nothing to do with any technical or anything to do with the rules of the IPL,” said de Villiers.
CSK also released a public statement affirming the legality of the signing, saying it was done “in complete compliance” with IPL regulations.
“A natural ball striker” who still has more to learn
While Brevis’ powerful six-hitting has wowed fans, de Villiers believes the youngster still has more to master to reach his full potential.
“Understanding the change of gears and when to take the foot off the pedal a little bit. But obviously, a natural ball striker. He strikes fear into all bowling attacks, and that’s the kind of player you want in your team,” said de Villiers regarding Brevis.

De Villiers’ remarks — and Brevis’ on-field performances — underscore a recurring IPL theme: the margin for error in auctions is razor-thin.
