BCCI extends IPL 2027 retention deadline to November 17 ahead of Goa mini-auction

The ten IPL franchises have been given two additional days to finalise their squads, while the December 16 auction remains on schedule despite a clash with India's international calendar.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has extended the player retention deadline for IPL 2027 by two days, giving all ten franchises until November 17 to finalise their squad decisions ahead of the December mini-auction, according to a report by Cricbuzz journalist Vijay Tagore.

The revised deadline was communicated to franchises on November 2 and replaces the original November 15 cut-off, as previously reported by cricexec. The BCCI has retained December 16 as the date for the mini-auction in Goa, leaving the auction schedule unchanged.

The adjustment gives franchises additional time to determine which players to retain and release before the auction. The upcoming mini-auction will be the final one under the IPL’s current auction cycle, with a mega-auction scheduled ahead of the 2028 season.

International schedule prompts retention deadline change

The extension follows an overlap between the original retention deadline and India’s international commitments, with November 15 coinciding with the fifth and final ODI against New Zealand at Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui.

The BCCI has provided franchises with an additional two days to complete their retention and release submissions, separating the deadline from the concluding match of the ODI series.

A similar scheduling overlap remains in December. India are scheduled to face Sri Lanka in the second ODI of their home series at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on December 16, the same day as the IPL mini-auction.

However, the BCCI has not indicated any intention to reschedule the auction, with its latest communication maintaining the previously announced date and venue.

Franchises face revised auction preparation timeline

The retention deadline is the first major milestone in a series of administrative dates leading up to the Goa auction, with player registration and franchise shortlisting scheduled across November and early December.

Player registration opened on November 2 and will close on November 23. Following the submission of retention and release lists on November 17, franchises will receive the registered player pool from which they can identify potential auction targets.

Teams have until November 27 to request additional players for consideration and until December 1 to submit their final auction selections. The completed auction register, including the division of players into bidding sets, is scheduled to be circulated on December 3.

Unlike a mega-auction, the mini-auction does not impose restrictions on the number of players franchises can retain. Teams can therefore preserve their existing squad structures while releasing players and using available auction funds to pursue replacements or additional signings.

Player trades reshape squads before the auction

Franchise preparations have already included player exchanges ahead of the retention deadline, with two trades completed so far.

Delhi Capitals have reacquired former Captain Rishabh Pant from Lucknow Super Giants in a transaction that sends left-arm wristspinner Kuldeep Yadav in the opposite direction.

Delhi Capitals have also exchanged fast bowler T Natarajan for legspinner Zeeshan Ansari in a separate trade with Sunrisers Hyderabad.

The transactions represent changes to the franchises’ playing personnel before the formal retention process concludes. Teams will have a further opportunity to strengthen or adjust their squads through the December mini-auction.

IPL approaches a new auction and media rights cycle

The 2027 mini-auction will be the last under the IPL’s current auction cycle, with the 2028 mega-auction marking the beginning of the league’s next media rights cycle. According to Cricinfo, the BCCI has yet to issue the tender for the new rights agreement, while the previous deal, concluded in 2022, was valued at INR 48,390.5 crore (approx. USD 5.1 billion).

The 2027 season itself does not yet have confirmed dates. When the BCCI outlined its provisional calendar for three future IPL seasons in 2024, the 2027 tournament was allocated a window running from March 14 to May 30.

However, following the BCCI’s Annual General Meeting in September 2026, Board Secretary Devajit Saikia indicated that the competition could instead begin towards the end of March.
