Ben Stokes could be set for a return to franchise cricket after retiring from international cricket, with Australia’s Big Bash League emerging as a potential destination while speculation also continues over whether he could one day reverse his England decision.
According to a report by CODE Sports, Sydney Sixers have emerged as the leading contenders to sign the former England Captain ahead of the 2026-27 Big Bash League season. Hobart Hurricanes are also understood to be interested, with the competition’s revised contracting model allowing clubs to invest more heavily in overseas marquee players.
A move to Sydney would mark Stokes’ first appearance in the Big Bash League in more than a decade after his brief spell with Melbourne Renegades during the 2014-15 campaign. The Sixers are also seen as a strong fit because of the presence of former England white-ball Coach Matthew Mott within their coaching setup.
BBL clubs eye marquee signing
Stokes’ availability has naturally attracted significant interest following his retirement from international cricket, with franchises viewing him as one of the biggest names potentially available on the global T20 market.
Discussing Hobart Hurricanes’ recruitment strategy, Cricket Tasmania Chief Executive Officer Dom Baker said, “I think probably the key to our success has been our consistency, particularly with our overseas players, and we’ll look to be consistent again.”
Addressing the prospect of signing Stokes, Baker added, “But if the opportunity comes up to grab someone like Ben Stokes, particularly from a way to fill stadiums, we’ll be at the front of the queue having a crack.”
Although Sydney Sixers appear to be leading the race, interest from multiple franchises underlines the commercial appeal Stokes continues to hold despite stepping away from the international game.
England have not closed the door
Stokes announced his retirement from international cricket in June following England’s home series against New Zealand. Since then, Joe Root has returned as Test captain, while Stephen Fleming has been appointed England’s new Test Head Coach as the men’s side begins its next chapter.
Despite those changes, England Men’s Managing Director Rob Key believes the possibility of Stokes returning in the future cannot be dismissed.
Speaking to Sky Sports, Key said, “I wouldn’t be surprised. Anything’s possible with Ben.”
Asked about the prospect of a comeback, he added, “It would be a brilliant story if he does.”
For now, however, the immediate focus appears to be on Stokes’ next move in franchise cricket, with a return to the Big Bash League potentially offering the former England Captain his first major assignment since retiring from the international stage.
