Cricket Scotland has confirmed the departure of Doug Watson from his role as Scotland Men’s Head Coach. The decision follows a review of recent performances and strategic planning around future fixtures and resource allocation.

Watson’s tenure featured key World Cup performances

Appointed initially as Interim Head Coach in March 2023, Watson oversaw a period of competitive success. Under his leadership, Scotland registered wins against three full member nations at the ICC Men’s World Cup Qualifier in Zimbabwe and secured victory at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Europe Qualifier in July 2023.

He was named permanent Head Coach in early 2024 and guided the team through a strong campaign at the 2024 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in the West Indies and USA. Scotland impressed in a group featuring Australia and England, recording wins against Namibia and Oman, and narrowly missing out on qualification for the Super Eights.

Leadership comments on departure

Steve Snell, Head of Performance at Cricket Scotland, praised Watson’s impact:

“Doug is well liked by the players, has made a positive impact in many areas and has enjoyed some memorable moments with the squad. With no fixtures until March 2026 and Doug based overseas, now is the right time to align our coaching structure with future needs.”

Trudy Lindblade, Chief Executive of Cricket Scotland, added:

“We’re grateful for Doug’s contributions to the team’s performance and culture since 2023. As we plan for 2026 and beyond, it became clear that a change was needed. We wish Doug and his family the very best for the future.”

Doug Watson reflects on Scotland tenure

In a statement, Doug Watson expressed appreciation for his time with the team:

“While I’m disappointed to be moving on, I leave with many fond memories. I’m proud to have led the team to the top of the ICC CWCL2 qualifying table. It’s been a pleasure working with this group, and I look forward to spending more time with my family.”

“I will follow Scotland’s progress closely and wish the team every success moving forward.”

Next steps for Cricket Scotland

Cricket Scotland will soon begin the recruitment process to appoint a new Men’s Head Coach, with the goal of having the new leadership in place ahead of the ICC CWCL2 series in Namibia scheduled for March 2026.
