Vaibhav Sooryavanshi‘s remarkable emergence as one of cricket’s brightest young stars is set to become the subject of academic research, with IIM Indore planning a comprehensive study into the teenager’s development and performance following his historic IPL 2026 campaign. The initiative, according to a PTI report, will examine the combination of personal, psychological and environmental factors that have helped the Rajasthan Royals batter achieve extraordinary success at just 15 years of age.

The move comes after a season in which Sooryavanshi rewrote several IPL records and established himself as one of the most talked-about players in world cricket. His performances have not only drawn attention from cricketing figures but have now sparked interest from one of India’s leading management institutions.

Why IIM Indore wants to study Sooryavanshi

Researchers at IIM Indore intend to explore how exceptional young talent develops and how prodigies cope with the expectations that accompany rapid success.

Explaining the purpose of the initiative, Director Himanshu Rai told PTI: “We want to understand what factors drive the extraordinary performance of child prodigies. Personality, behaviour, and practice patterns, along with the support of parents, teachers, coaches, and seniors, are crucial for such performance.”

Discussing another aspect of the research, Rai added: “In our study, we also want to look at how to deal with such expectations or obstacles.”

The project is expected to examine a wide range of factors, including talent development, discipline, behavioural traits, leadership qualities, mental resilience and long-term performance sustainability.

A season that captured national attention

Sooryavanshi’s IPL 2026 campaign provided ample material for analysis. Representing Rajasthan Royals, the left-hander scored 776 runs at a strike rate of 237.30 to finish as the tournament’s leading run-scorer and claim the Orange Cap.

His tally of 72 sixes established a new single-season IPL record, surpassing the previous mark held by Chris Gayle. The Bihar-born batter also became the youngest player to win the Orange Cap and added several individual honours during a season that transformed him into one of the league’s biggest attractions.

The teenager’s impact extended beyond statistics, with his aggressive batting style influencing opposition planning and changing the dynamic of matches.

In a Reddit post, Legendary Cricketer Sachin Tendulkar wrote: “Vaibhav Sooryavanshi had an influence on games that went beyond the runs he scored. Oppositions were thinking about him, teams were planning for him, and fans were waiting for him long before he arrived at the crease.”

Reflecting on Sooryavanshi’s performances in the knockout stages, Tendulkar added: “His ability to score rapidly in both the Eliminator and the Qualifier showed that his intent remained unchanged, even as the pressure increased. More importantly, his batting seemed to give Rajasthan Royals an added sense of belief every time he walked out to the middle.”

Comparisons with a young Sachin Tendulkar

Former India Pacer Arul Wassan is among those who believe Sooryavanshi possesses qualities rarely seen in players of his age.

Speaking to PTI, Wassan said: “He is a one in a million generational talent. Can you imagine the maturity and audacity of this boy? He reminds me of 16-year-old Sachin Tendulkar.”

Drawing a further comparison with Tendulkar’s early international years: “I saw Sachin and that game maturity and audacity to take the bull by the horns (during the 1989 tour of Pakistan). God has blessed him with X factor along with the game & power.”

Research extends beyond cricket performance

While Sooryavanshi’s achievements on the field are central to the study, IIM Indore’s research will also focus on the broader support systems that shape elite performers and help them navigate early success.

Discussing the wider significance of the project, Director Himanshu Rai told ANI: “Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s story is not merely about exceptional performance in cricket. It’s a significant case in human potential, talent development, discipline, mental resilience and the pursuit of sustained excellence. At just 15 years of age, the confidence, skill and composure with which Vaibhav has established himself on the national and international stage demonstrate that extraordinary talent when supported by the right environment, guidance, and opportunities can produce remarkable outcomes. His journey also highlights that great achievements are rarely the result of individual ability alone.”

Rai also outlined the scope of the planned research: “The support of family, coaches, institutions, and years of dedicated effort plays an equally critical role in nurturing excellence… Therefore, safeguarding talent, supporting mental wellbeing, maintaining emotional balance and ensuring long-term development must be given as much importance as celebrating achievement itself. In this context, IIM Indore will undertake a comprehensive and multidisciplinary study. The research will examine the social, psychological, familial, and institutional factors that play a decisive role in shaping high-performing young talent. Experts in sports management, leadership, behavioral science, and human potential development will work together to understand how early success influences the thinking, decision-making, self-confidence and future aspirations of young achievers.”

Next challenge awaits

Despite his breakthrough IPL season, Sooryavanshi’s schedule shows little sign of slowing down. The teenager has already joined the India A squad for the upcoming tri-series in Sri Lanka featuring Afghanistan A and Sri Lanka A.

Earlier this year, he also played a decisive role in India’s Under-19 World Cup triumph, producing a blistering 175 from 80 balls in the final against England. As his cricketing career continues to accelerate, IIM Indore’s study will attempt to understand not only how exceptional young talent emerges, but how it can be supported and sustained over the long term.
