Vaibhav Sooryavanshi‘s emergence, Royal Challengers Bengaluru‘s team culture and the evolving tactical battle in T20 cricket were among the themes that stood out to Sachin Tendulkar as he reflected on IPL 2026. Writing in a post on Reddit, the India great shared a series of observations from the season, highlighting the performances, trends and moments he believes defined the tournament.
IPL 2026 produced several standout storylines, from the rise of teenage talent to the continued evolution of team strategies. For Tendulkar, one player’s impact extended beyond statistics and into the way opponents, teammates and supporters viewed the game.
Sooryavanshi’s influence went beyond the scorecard
Few players captured attention throughout the season quite like Rajasthan Royals opener Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, whose aggressive batting made him one of the competition’s biggest talking points.
The 15-year-old finished IPL 2026 as the Orange Cap winner with 776 runs in 16 matches at an average of 48.50 and a strike rate of 237.30. His campaign included one century, five half-centuries, 63 fours and 72 sixes, establishing him as one of the season’s most influential performers.
Sachin Tendulkar, India World Cup-winning batter, said: “Vaibhav Sooryavanshi had an influence on games that went beyond the runs he scored. Oppositions were thinking about him, teams were planning for him, and fans were waiting for him long before he arrived at the crease.”
The 15-year-old’s performances played a major role in Rajasthan Royals reaching the latter stages of the tournament and transformed him into one of the most talked-about players in world cricket.
Sooryavanshi carried that form into the playoffs, blasting 97 from 29 balls against Sunrisers Hyderabad in the Eliminator before following it with 96 from 47 deliveries against Gujarat Titans in the Qualifier.
He added: “His ability to score rapidly in both the Eliminator and the Qualifier showed that his intent remained unchanged, even as the pressure increased. More importantly, his batting seemed to give Rajasthan Royals an added sense of belief every time he walked out to the middle.”
The teenager’s performances not only delivered results but also altered how opponents approached matches against Rajasthan Royals during the second half of the tournament.
Team identity proved decisive
While individual brilliance played a major role throughout IPL 2026, Tendulkar also pointed to the importance of team culture and collective responsibility.
Royal Challengers Bengaluru capped the season by successfully defending their IPL title, with Rajat Patidar leading the franchise through another championship-winning campaign.
Discussing Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s campaign, he noted: “Every successful team develops an identity over the course of a campaign. RCB’s identity seemed to be built around shared responsibility. Rajat Patidar led from the front right through, but just as importantly, he helped create an environment where others could do the same. That balance between leadership and contribution was an important factor in their run to yet another final.”
The former India Captain also highlighted Punjab Kings‘ approach, describing the franchise as one of the most energetic teams in the competition.
He observed: “Punjab Kings brought wonderful energy to the tournament. Their cricket was positive, brave and often game-changing. Momentum plays a crucial role in lengthy tournaments. Eventually, in such a fast-moving tournament it boils down to process and not getting attached to results. Punjab focused more on process in the first half and more on results in the second.”
Consistency remains a winning formula
Tendulkar also identified Gujarat Titans‘ ability to maintain performance levels across a long campaign as one of the team’s defining characteristics.
He wrote: “What stands out about the Gujarat Titans is their ability to operate within a remarkably consistent performance band across an entire season. The IPL is inherently volatile, but GT rarely stray too far from their method, even when results fluctuate. They minimize both peaks and troughs, staying close to their brand of cricket more consistently than most teams. Over a long tournament, that ability to control uncertainty often proves more valuable than occasional bursts of brilliance or isolated match-winning performances.”
The comments reflect a broader theme that emerged throughout the season, with several of the strongest-performing sides relying on consistency and clearly defined methods rather than isolated moments of brilliance.
Tactical details continue to shape matches
Beyond players and teams, Tendulkar also singled out specific moments that illustrated the increasingly sophisticated nature of T20 cricket.
Reflecting on Josh Hazlewood’s dismissal of Jos Buttler in the first qualifier, he stated: “Josh Hazlewood’s dismissal of Jos Buttler in the fifth over of the 1st Qualifier showed the value of deception. Buttler had hit deliveries for a 4, 6 and a 4, and once a batter settles into a rhythm like that, he often tends to commit early. What made the wicket special was how he subtly slowed down the next delivery by 10kms/hr and Buttler had already gone through his shot by the time the ball reached him.”
The observation formed part of Tendulkar’s wider assessment of how tactical battles continue to evolve across the format.
A new idea for T20 cricket’s middle overs
One area where Tendulkar believes further innovation could emerge is in the structure of the Powerplay.
Discussing a trend he noticed during the tournament, he said: “One trend I noticed this season was how many games were decided between overs 7 and 15. Teams are now far better prepared for powerplays and death overs than before. I feel, the Powerplay needs to be split into 2 parts. (First 4 overs as the batting powerplay and 2 overs of bowling powerplay which could be utilized at any point in the innings)”
The proposal would create an additional strategic element for captains and coaches as they navigate different phases of an innings.
He added: “If implemented, this could become the most strategic phase of T20 cricket.”
Looking back on the season, Tendulkar’s reflections highlighted how IPL 2026 was shaped by a combination of emerging talent, strong team identities and an increasingly sophisticated tactical approach, reinforcing the constant evolution that continues to define the format.
