Former England captain Kevin Pietersen has stepped down as mentor of the Delhi Capitals ahead of the 2026 Indian Premier League season, bringing an end to a brief coaching stint with the franchise.
The decision comes just weeks before the start of IPL 2026, leaving Delhi without one of its highest-profile backroom figures shortly before the tournament begins. Pietersen confirmed the news himself on social media, explaining that he could not commit the time required for the role.
“I can’t be the mentor for Delhi Capitals in this IPL season. I can’t commit to the time that the job requires. Best wishes to all the players for this season! Though I’ll see you back in the commentary box! IPL is the world’s best league, and I can’t wait to see you all soon!,” Pietersen said in a post on X, written in Hindi.

Despite stepping away from the mentoring role, Pietersen confirmed he will still be involved in the IPL as a broadcaster during the upcoming season.

Delhi Capitals quickly responded to Pietersen’s announcement with a warm message on social media, making it clear the parting was amicable.

The response highlighted Pietersen’s long association with the franchise, both as a player and later as a mentor.
During his playing career in the IPL, Pietersen represented multiple teams including Delhi Daredevils — the franchise’s previous identity — as well as Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Sunrisers Hyderabad and Pune Warriors India. Across 36 IPL matches, the former England batter scored 1,001 runs and produced several memorable performances.
A short but eventful mentoring stint
Pietersen joined the Delhi Capitals coaching setup in 2025, marking his first formal coaching or mentoring assignment in the IPL since retiring as a player in the tournament in 2016.
His lone season with the franchise showed early promise. Delhi started IPL 2025 strongly, winning their first four matches before losing momentum later in the campaign.
Ultimately, the team finished fifth on the points table, narrowly missing out on a playoff spot.
During the season, Pietersen worked alongside Head Coach Hemang Badani and other members of the coaching staff, helping guide a squad that blended established international players with emerging Indian talent.
Delhi Capitals build strong squad for IPL 2026
Pietersen’s departure comes at a time when Delhi Capitals appear to have assembled a competitive roster for the 2026 campaign.
The franchise retained several key players including Axar Patel, KL Rahul, Kuldeep Yadav and Mitchell Starc, while also strengthening the squad with international additions such as David Miller, Ben Duckett, Lungi Ngidi, Kyle Jamieson and Pathum Nissanka.
Delhi also made a notable investment in domestic talent during the auction, including signing pacer Auqib Nabi Dar for ₹8.40 crore (approx. $0.9 million)
While losing a high-profile mentor so close to the season could present a challenge, the franchise retains an experienced coaching structure and a settled core of players heading into the new campaign.
IPL 2026 schedule and Delhi’s opening fixtures
The 19th edition of the IPL is scheduled to begin on March 28, 2026, when defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru host Sunrisers Hyderabad at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium.
The first phase of the tournament will run until April 12, with matches scheduled across 10 venues including Bengaluru, Mumbai, Guwahati, New Chandigarh, Lucknow, Kolkata, Chennai, Delhi, Ahmedabad and Hyderabad.
Delhi Capitals are set to begin their campaign on April 1 against Lucknow Super Giants at the Ekana Cricket Stadium.
They will then return home to face Mumbai Indians and Gujarat Titans, before traveling to Chennai to take on Chennai Super Kings.
Despite the sudden change in their backroom setup, Delhi will hope their strengthened squad and coaching staff can turn last season’s near miss into a serious title push in IPL 2026.
