Kieron Pollard will not represent Joburg Super Kings (JSK) in the 2027 SA20 season, with the former West Indies all-rounder withdrawing from the franchise shortly after being appointed Head Coach of Mumbai Indians (MI).
According to a report by Cricbuzz journalist Vijay Tagore, Pollard communicated his unavailability to the Johannesburg-based team a day after his appointment was formally announced. The decision leaves JSK needing to replace a player it had acquired at the recent SA20 auction.
The development is particularly notable because Joburg Super Kings belongs to the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) franchise network, while Pollard has spent much of his professional career with Mumbai Indians, whose ownership group also operates MI Cape Town in the same South African competition.
Joburg Super Kings confirm Pollard’s withdrawal
JSK had signed Pollard for R1.5 million (approx. USD 90.08K) at the SA20 auction earlier this month, but the franchise will now need to find another player ahead of the tournament’s fifth edition.
Chennai Super Kings and Super Kings Franchises Chief Executive Officer Kasi Viswanathan confirmed the development to Cricbuzz, stating: “He has conveyed to us that he will not be able to play for Joburg Super Kings.”
Viswanathan also outlined the franchise’s next step, adding: “We will now look for a replacement.”
The upcoming SA20 season is scheduled to run from January 17 to February 21, giving JSK a period in which to address the vacancy created by Pollard’s withdrawal.
Mumbai Indians say Pollard made his own decision
Pollard’s planned participation for a Super Kings-owned franchise had attracted attention because of his extensive association with the Mumbai Indians organisation.
MI Cape Town, another SA20 franchise, is part of the same ownership network as Mumbai Indians. Had Pollard played for JSK, he would have represented a rival ownership group in a competition where MI also operates a team.
However, Mumbai Indians did not direct Pollard to withdraw from the Johannesburg franchise.
Before his decision became public, a Mumbai Indians source told Cricbuzz: “It’s up to KP on the matter. We have given no instructions.”
Why MI Cape Town signed Shimron Hetmyer instead
Pollard’s move to Joburg Super Kings followed an SA20 auction in which MI Cape Town had an opportunity to pursue its longtime associate but instead acquired West Indies batter Shimron Hetmyer.
MI Cape Town paid R1.5 million (approx. USD 90.1K) for Hetmyer, the same amount JSK subsequently spent on Pollard.
The decision was influenced by the sequence in which players became available at the auction, with MI Cape Town unwilling to risk missing out on a middle-order option while waiting for Pollard’s name to be called.
Explaining the franchise’s approach, a Mumbai Indians source told Cricbuzz: “It all depended on the auction order. Both Hetmyer and KP perform the same role in the middle order. Hetmyer’s name came up first, and we could not have waited for Pollard. What was the guarantee that no other team would compete with us and we would get him at the auction?”
Pollard’s Mumbai Indians appointment changes his responsibilities
Pollard’s withdrawal comes as he takes on a more prominent leadership position within the franchise where he established much of his T20 career.
The 39-year-old has been promoted from Mumbai Indians Batting Coach to Head Coach, extending an association that began when he joined the Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise in 2010.
He played for Mumbai Indians across 13 IPL seasons until 2022 and was part of all five of the team’s championship-winning campaigns.
The decision to appoint Pollard followed discussions with the MI management, which viewed his familiarity with the organisation and standing among its players as important qualities for the role.
Mumbai Indians Owner Nita Ambani welcomed his appointment in a statement, saying: “Pollard joined Mumbai Indians as a young 22-year-old and, over the past sixteen years, has become an integral part of our family. As a player, he gave us many unforgettable moments, and as a coach, he has continued to share his experience, passion and deep understanding of the game. We are delighted to see him take on this new responsibility as Head Coach. Polly knows what it means to wear the MI jersey and what it takes to play for the Paltan. I am confident that he will bring the same commitment, belief and determination to this role. I wish him every success as he leads the team into its next chapter.”
The appointment represents another step in Pollard’s transition into coaching while he continues to maintain playing commitments in franchise cricket.
Pollard’s career spans Mumbai Indians’ global franchises
Although Pollard retired from the IPL after the 2022 season, he continued to represent MI-owned teams in overseas competitions.
Between 2024 and 2026, he played 12 matches for MI Cape Town in SA20, 30 for MI New York in Major League Cricket and 25 for MI Emirates in the ILT20.
He has also represented Trinbago Knight Riders in the Caribbean Premier League, where the Mumbai Indians ownership group does not operate a franchise.
In addition to his new role with Mumbai Indians, Pollard serves as Head Coach of MI London in The Hundred, further extending his involvement in the organisation’s international franchise operations.
His playing career outside the IPL has therefore continued alongside an expanding set of coaching responsibilities within the MI network.
For Joburg Super Kings, the immediate consequence is a change to their squad plans ahead of SA20 2027, with the franchise now searching for a replacement for a player secured at auction only weeks earlier.
