The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) officially launched the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy with a grand opening ceremony at Dewan-e-Khas in Lahore Fort, as confirmed by the ICC. The event marked the return of the prestigious tournament after an eight-year hiatus, generating excitement ahead of the opener on February 19, where hosts Pakistan will face New Zealand.
Lahore Fort, chosen for its deep cultural significance, was illuminated in a dazzling display, setting the stage for the first Champions Trophy since 2017. “The significance of the venue (it) not only represents Pakistan’s rich cultural heritage but also underscores the deep-rooted legacy of cricket in the nation. This is your moment to fill the stadiums,” PCB Chair Mohsin Naqvi stated, urging fans to support the tournament.
Pakistan, defending champions from 2017, will look to retain their title. Members of the victorious squad from that edition played a key role in the ceremony, reminiscing about their historic 180-run victory over India in the final at The Oval, London.
Naqvi emphasized Pakistan’s readiness and enthusiasm to host the event, calling it a ‘momentous occasion’ for the cricket-loving nation. “The ICC Champions Trophy 2025 will return to Pakistan for the first time in 29 years. This tournament is more than just cricket; it is an opportunity to showcase Pakistan’s hospitality and passion,” he said at the event.
The tournament will feature two groups, with Pakistan placed alongside New Zealand, India, and Bangladesh, while Australia, England, South Africa, and first-time participants Afghanistan make up the other group. The top two teams from each group will advance to the semi-finals, setting the stage for an intense competition.
