LSG crisis deepens with fourth straight loss as Goenka’s viral moment with Pant shifts focus

Lucknow’s batting collapse raises playoff fears, but owner’s public backing of Pant highlights a calmer leadership stance

Sanjiv Goenka embraces Rishabh Pant on the field during an IPL match in a celebratory moment.

Lucknow Super Giants’ struggles in Indian Premier League 2026 took another hit this week—but it was an off-field moment involving Sanjiv Goenka and Rishabh Pant that captured the cricket world’s attention.

LSG slump deepens after fourth straight loss

Lucknow Super Giants fell to a 40-run defeat against Rajasthan Royals, extending their losing streak to four matches and leaving them languishing in ninth place on the table.

Chasing a modest 160 at home, LSG collapsed to 119 all out in 18 overs despite a fighting 55 from Mitchell Marsh. The defeat was particularly frustrating given the strong showing from their bowling unit, which had earlier restricted Rajasthan to a manageable total.

The result continues a worrying trend for the franchise, which has now won just two of its first seven matches—putting serious pressure on its playoff ambitions as the tournament approaches the halfway mark.

Pant points to batting failures as key issue

Speaking after the match, captain Rishabh Pant did not shy away from addressing the team’s biggest concern—the batting unit.

“I think it is difficult to explain. Like, it’s definitely our batting is letting us down, but at the same time, we are disappointed as a team, as a group, but at the same time, you’ve got to keep finding ways. You have to look for answers inside, not outside, but that’s how it is as of now,” Pant said.

Pant, who himself fell for a duck during the chase, emphasized that the responsibility lies collectively within the group.

“See, definitely we could have taken some time while batting, and at the same time, you know, not making any excuse out there, like including myself in that. We could have taken it a little deeper because I think the bowlers did a fantastic job, especially after the last game. As a batting group, we need to put our hand up and try to finish that job for the bowlers also,” he added.

Despite the mounting losses, Pant maintained belief in the squad’s ability to recover.

“There is still a lot we want to look at the positive side. We all know it’s disappointing for us as a team, but we have to keep our head high and look for answers inside, and we surely know that we have enough firepower in our bowling and batting, and we can still turn it around. That’s what I believe in.”

Goenka’s post-match gesture goes viral

While the on-field performance raised concerns, it was the post-match interaction between owner Sanjiv Goenka and Pant that drew widespread attention.

Goenka, who has previously been seen in intense post-match discussions, displayed a notably different approach this time. After the game, he engaged in a long conversation with Pant and shared a hug—an interaction that quickly went viral on social media.

The moment carried added significance as Pant had earlier taken a blow to the face while attempting to collect a throw during Rajasthan’s innings, briefly requiring medical attention.

Pressure builds on LSG’s long-term strategy

This downturn comes amid broader questions around LSG’s direction. After making the playoffs in their first two seasons, the franchise has struggled for consistency, including a seventh-place finish in 2024 that triggered leadership changes.

With time running out in the current campaign, LSG face a critical stretch of fixtures, starting with a clash against fellow strugglers Kolkata Knight Riders.

Another defeat could all but end their playoff hopes—raising further scrutiny on both leadership decisions and squad balance.

Leadership tone could define LSG’s response

In high-performance environments like the IPL, ownership behavior often sets the tone during adversity. Goenka’s public show of support for Pant may signal a shift toward backing leadership stability rather than reacting impulsively to results.

Whether that translates into an on-field turnaround remains to be seen—but for now, LSG’s season hangs in the balance, with both performance and morale under pressure.
