A final inspection scheduled for March 13 will determine whether Bengaluru’s M. Chinnaswamy Stadium receives clearance to host matches during the opening phase of IPL 2026. According to a report by ESPNcricinfo, a panel of experts appointed by the Karnataka government will review the venue’s readiness following a series of upgrades implemented in recent months.
The inspection comes just over two weeks before Royal Challengers Bengaluru are due to begin their title defence with a home match at the stadium.
RCB’s early fixtures depend on inspection outcome
Bengaluru is expected to stage the defending champions’ first game of the season on March 28 against SunRisers Hyderabad, followed by another home fixture against Chennai Super Kings on April 5.
The venue forms a key part of Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s schedule in the tournament, with five home matches currently planned there during the season. Two additional home games for the franchise are scheduled to be played at the Shaheed Veer Narayan Stadium in Raipur.
However, the March 13 review will effectively decide whether the Bengaluru venue is ready to host matches when the tournament begins.
Renovation work carried out across the stadium complex
The Karnataka State Cricket Association has undertaken a range of infrastructure improvements at the stadium since late last year.
These works include creating additional entry points for spectators and widening existing gates to improve access during high-attendance events. New walkways have also been constructed around the stadium complex to support smoother crowd movement.
Authorities have also created holding areas near the venue and established clearer entry and exit routes for emergency vehicles.
Safety review followed 2025 crowd tragedy
The current overhaul of the stadium stems from the stampede that occurred during Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s IPL title celebrations in 2025, when 11 people lost their lives and dozens were injured.
Following the incident, the Karnataka government set up the Justice D’Cunha Committee to carry out a comprehensive safety and structural review of the stadium. The panel outlined a series of short-term upgrades that needed to be completed before large-scale events could be hosted again.
The Karnataka State Cricket Association was given until March 15 to complete those recommendations.
Stadium upgrades began after new KSCA leadership
Work on the stadium redevelopment began in December soon after former India fast bowler Venkatesh Prasad assumed office as President of the Karnataka State Cricket Association.
The association has since remained in contact with government authorities during the renovation process to ensure the venue meets the required regulatory standards.
Officials have also indicated that safety audit concerns which previously led to power supply being disconnected at the stadium have now been resolved.
New entry systems and transport coordination planned
Beyond the structural upgrades, additional operational measures are also being introduced for the IPL season.
The franchise plans to implement QR code ticket scanning to streamline match-day entry and reduce the need for physical ticket exchanges near the stadium.
There have also been discussions involving the Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation to explore transport coordination aimed at easing crowd movement around the venue during matches.
The outcome of the March 13 inspection will ultimately determine whether the stadium receives final approval in time for Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s opening IPL 2026 home game.
