Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) has launched its 2025 Community Cricket Heroes campaign in partnership with The Cricketer magazine, aiming to celebrate 11 unsung heroes who have made significant contributions to grassroots and community cricket across the UK.

Now in its third year, the initiative will once again recognise the efforts of volunteers, coaches, and players who are making a meaningful impact at the community level. Nominations are open now and close at 23:59 BST on 4 June 2025.

Winners to be honoured at Lord’s in the MCC President’s Suite

The selected heroes will be invited to watch a major fixture from the MCC President’s Suite at Lord’s, hosted by MCC President Lord Mervyn King. Matches include an England Women’s ODI vs India, an England Men’s ODI vs South Africa, or a London Spirit game in The Hundred.

The campaign highlights stories of people who go above and beyond for cricket in their communities—whether it’s a coach inspiring the next generation, a volunteer giving decades of service, or a player overcoming adversity to support the game. A judging panel selected by MCC will evaluate entries.

Past heroes: Stories that inspired the cricketing community

Last year’s honorees included Heather Booth di Giovanni, recognised for her work with Bristol Afghans CC. Reflecting on her visit to Lord’s, she said, “I have to say, I was astounded, overwhelmed and very emotional. To spend a day in the President’s Suite at Lord’s was amazing… the whole day was wonderful.”

Another 2024 winner, Tariq Aslam from Newham CC, shared: “To be recognised in this way means we have been seen to be doing something quite special. We do what we do for the love of the game, and it really was a privilege to spend the day at Lord’s.”

MCC and The Cricketer champion the grassroots game

MCC President Lord King said: “Grassroots and community cricket are the foundation of our sport, and it’s essential for us to support and celebrate these efforts. As MCC President, I am eager to hear the inspiring stories of those making a real difference in their local cricket communities.”

Huw Turbervill, Editor of The Cricketer, added: “Grassroots cricket is so important to our readers and the game they love. Meeting the heroes and seeing the joy on their faces at Lord’s is very special.”

The campaign continues MCC’s commitment to the community game and to recognising those whose passion and commitment ensure cricket thrives at every level.
