Jasprit Bumrah’s dominance in the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup has sparked fresh debate about his standing among the greatest bowlers in modern cricket.
The conversation gained traction after former England Captain Michael Vaughan reposted a video clip from the Stick to Cricket podcast on X with a bold claim about the Indian fast bowler’s influence. “England would have won the WC if they had Bumrah..,” Vaughan wrote while reposting the video from the podcast’s official account.

Vaughan compares Bumrah’s impact to Messi and Ronaldo
The conversation on the podcast quickly turned to how transformative Bumrah could be if he played for another side.
“I reckon, if you put Jasprit Bumrah in England’s team, they win it (T20 World Cup). Probably like Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo, these kind of…,” Vaughan said while speaking on the Stick to Cricket podcast.

Former England batter Mark Butcher agreed with the sentiment, suggesting that Bumrah’s presence could elevate almost any team to championship status. “I reckon if you put him in anybody’s team, they’ll win it,” Butcher added on the podcast.
“Exactly,” Vaughan replied.
Debate over Bumrah’s standing among the greatest
The discussion then shifted toward Bumrah’s legacy and whether he should already be considered the best bowler of his generation.
“Didn’t you say he’s the best bowler you’ve ever seen?” David Lloyd asked on the podcast.
“Yeah, that I’ve seen,” Vaughan responded.
The former England Captain went further, explaining that decades of watching international cricket had shaped his view. “And you gotta remember, I started watching cricket, probably from the 85-86, when I really started to study cricket. He’s the best I’ve seen,” he added.
Cook questions the ‘best-ever’ label
Former England Captain Alastair Cook acknowledged Bumrah’s excellence across formats but raised a question about whether he has produced a defining match-winning spell in Test cricket.
“Is he the best in terms of match-winning spells in Test cricket? Without a shadow of a doubt, he is the best all-format bowler around, I think. I mean, you can safely say that. But has he, like, in a Test match bowled a spell like an 8/15, or is he not that kind of bowler?” Cook said on the podcast.
Vaughan highlights Bumrah’s spells in Australia
Vaughan responded by pointing to Bumrah’s performances overseas, particularly in Australia where he has repeatedly troubled top batting line-ups on batting-friendly pitches.
“I’ve seen him a bit in Australia. Some of the spells have been different — that too on flat decks,” Vaughan said.
Bumrah’s record-breaking World Cup performance
The praise follows Bumrah’s influential role in India’s title-winning campaign at the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.
India defeated New Zealand by 96 runs in the final in Ahmedabad, with Bumrah delivering a historic performance. His figures of 4/15 made him the first fast bowler to take a four-wicket haul in a T20 World Cup knockout match.
He finished the tournament as joint-highest wicket-taker alongside Varun Chakravarthy with 14 wickets at an average of 12.42 and an economy rate of 6.21, beating out America’s Shadley van Schalkwyk (who only played in the group stage for a total of four matches, as the USA were eliminated).
Across his T20 World Cup career, Bumrah now has 40 wickets in 26 matches at an average of 13.65 and an economy rate of 5.66, making him the most successful fast bowler in the tournament’s history. He has also won the title twice, including the 2024 edition where he was named Player of the Tournament.
For Vaughan and several former England players, those numbers reinforce their belief that Bumrah’s influence can change the outcome of major tournaments — much like a generational superstar does in other sports.
