Cricket Namibia has appointed legendary former player Craig Williams as the new Head Coach of the national men’s cricket team, the FNB Eagles — marking a bold new chapter for Namibian cricket.

Williams, who represented Namibia from 2007 to 2022 and is one of the country’s most iconic cricketers, now returns in a leadership role to guide the national side through its next phase of international competition, including qualification campaigns for the 2026 ICC T20 World Cup and the 2027 ICC Men’s World Cup, set to be co-hosted by Namibia.

A legend returns: Craig Williams to lead Namibia’s next era

Williams’ career includes over 400 matches across formats and 15,000 runs for Namibia. Since retiring, he has remained deeply involved in the cricketing ecosystem through coaching, player development, and investing in facilities for young talent.

Cricket Namibia CEO Johan Muller expressed strong confidence in Williams’ appointment:

“Appointing Craig Williams as the new head coach of the FNB Eagles marks an exciting new chapter for our men’s national team. Craig brings not only world-class cricketing expertise but a deep understanding of our players, our culture, and our ambitions.”

Muller also emphasized the goal of building on Namibia’s rising international profile and creating a globally competitive, inclusive, and values-driven cricket environment.

Pierre de Bruyn’s legacy and transition of leadership

Williams succeeds outgoing head coach Pierre de Bruyn, who played a transformative role in Namibia’s cricket journey since his appointment in 2018. Under de Bruyn’s leadership, the FNB Eagles:

  • Achieved ODI status
  • Qualified for three ICC T20 World Cups
  • Recorded historic wins against full member nations

Dannel van der Walt, Board Member of Cricket Namibia, acknowledged de Bruyn’s legacy:

“Pierre has played a pivotal role in our rise on the international stage. His impact on the growth and foundation of cricket in Namibia has been truly transformative.”

Williams speaks on his return as Head Coach

Williams shared his excitement and gratitude on being entrusted with the head coach role:

“It is an incredible honour to return to the national team, this time as Head Coach. Representing Namibia in any capacity is a privilege, and to now lead the FNB Eagles is something I’m truly excited about.”

He added that the decision to return was made easier by the support of his family and the backing of Cricket Namibia’s leadership:

“I am 100% invested. I represented Namibia as a player, and now I’m ready to give my all in this next chapter as Head Coach.”

Known for his tactical acumen, passion for player development, and deep understanding of Namibian cricket’s ethos, Williams is expected to lead the FNB Eagles with distinction as they aim for global competitiveness in the next World Cup cycle.
