The BCCI is approaching a major change at the top of India’s senior men’s selection committee, with Parthiv Patel emerging as the frontrunner to succeed Ajit Agarkar if the incumbent Chairman does not continue beyond his current tenure. According to a report by The Times of India, Patel’s name has been under consideration in Indian cricket circles for around six months, with support developing for the former India wicketkeeper-batter as a potential successor.
Agarkar’s current contract is understood to run until October 4, leaving the Board with a narrow window to determine how it will handle the position. The BCCI’s 95th Annual General Meeting did not settle the matter, instead leaving responsibility for decisions around selectors with its office-bearers.
BCCI Vice-President Rajeev Shukla, speaking to reporters after the AGM in Mumbai, said: “AGM authorises office-bearers to take a decision on selectors.”
BCCI keeps Agarkar decision open
While speculation around a change has intensified, the BCCI has publicly stopped short of confirming Agarkar’s departure. BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia, speaking to reporters after the AGM, said: “We still have 15 days to go. Fifteen days is a long time in the world of cricket. We have time. We will make a decision and, at the appropriate time, we will let you know.”
Saikia also addressed how the subject had been handled at the AGM, stating: “Today, there was no discussion on any individual.”
Separate reports, however, indicate that Agarkar has already communicated an intention not to continue after his current term. According to Cricinfo, Agarkar decided not to seek an extension and communicated that decision to the BCCI during the week of the AGM, having previously explored whether the Board wanted him to remain through the 2027 ODI World Cup.
Sportstar reported a similar development from within the Board. A BCCI office-bearer speaking to the publication on condition of anonymity said: “Agarkar has formally informed the BCCI just before the AGM that he doesn’t wish to continue as a selector”
The Indian Express also reported that the Board is preparing for a change. A source speaking to the publication said: “Agarkar didn’t ask for an extension. As there was no interest from his side, the BCCI has decided to look for a new chief selector.”
Earlier discussions add context to Agarkar’s position
Agarkar had been eligible to continue beyond his present term, but discussions over his longer-term future predated the latest developments. According to Hindustan Times, he sent a communication to the BCCI referring to conversations from earlier in the year about the Board preparing for an alternative once his current tenure concluded.
A BCCI official told Hindustan Times: “In his communication, Agarkar has cited his previous discussions with the board in February, when he had first alerted top decision makers to look for alternatives at the end of his current term.”
Questions around Agarkar’s position had also increased after he did not attend a recent BCCI review meeting involving several senior figures, including Head Coach Gautam Gambhir, Test and ODI Captain Shubman Gill, T20I Captain Shreyas Iyer and Centre of Excellence Head VVS Laxman. Saikia had attributed Agarkar’s absence to him being out of town.
The absence nevertheless attracted attention because of the senior personnel assembled for the meeting. A source close to developments told TimesofIndia.com: “You had everyone available there. It’s not every day you get the key figures of Indian cricket under the same roof. Head coach travelled from Delhi, Laxman travelled, and Gill and Iyer both juggled their commitments. Mithun Manhas travelled too. So it was a bit strange that the chairman of the men’s senior selection committee wasn’t there when key issues were on the table. It just doesn’t add up.”
Parthiv Patel leads succession picture
If Agarkar leaves, Patel would bring greater Test experience than the other names currently associated with the senior selection panel. He played 25 Tests for India, compared with 24 for Pragyan Ojha, 23 for SS Das, 14 for RP Singh and six for Ajay Ratra.
Patel is currently an Assistant and Batting Coach with Gujarat Titans and also works in commentary when his schedule permits. The Times of India reported that he had been in line for an expanded role with the IPL franchise from the next cycle, although a move into the selection committee could change those plans.
Ojha is another possible option within the succession picture. According to Cricbuzz, if an immediate permanent appointment cannot be completed, Ojha could potentially take charge on an interim basis while the BCCI goes through the required process for appointing Agarkar’s replacement.
That process could prevent an immediate transition to a permanent new Chairman. The Board would need to advertise the vacancy and conduct interviews, with the appointment potentially taking at least a month to complete.
BCCI also working on junior selector appointments
The potential senior-selection transition comes as the BCCI is separately filling its junior men’s selection committee. The Board has received a large number of applications for five positions and is shortlisting candidates before forwarding them to its cricket committee, which will make the appointments.
The BCCI expects that process to be completed within 10 to 15 days, with the existing junior selectors approaching the end of their tenures.
Agarkar, meanwhile, has continued carrying out his selection responsibilities during the final weeks of his current term, including chairing the meeting for India’s West Indies white-ball squads and the Irani Cup selection. With the AGM having authorised the BCCI’s office-bearers to handle selector decisions, clarity over the senior committee is expected around the expiry of his current tenure on October 4.
