PCB clears 12 Pakistan players for BBL, BPL, and ILT20 — denies NOC to T20I captain Agha Salman

The PCB has greenlit NOCs for top names including Babar Azam and Shaheen Afridi to participate in BBL, BPL, and ILT20, while skipper Salman Ali Agha has been left out.

PCB opens overseas T20 doors for top players

In a significant move ahead of the 2026 T20 World Cup season, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has granted No-Objection Certificates (NOCs) to 12 of its centrally contracted players, enabling them to participate in three franchise-based T20 leagues during the crowded December–January window.

According to multiple reports, this development marks a wide-ranging approval by the board, aimed at providing its key players with international exposure in the lead-up to high-stakes bilateral series and ICC events.

BBL, BPL, and ILT20 to feature Pakistani stars

Among the tournaments cleared for participation are the Big Bash League (BBL) in Australia, the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL), and the International League T20 (ILT20) in the UAE. The decision ensures game time for nearly all of Pakistan’s frontline white-ball cricketers, with several names already snapped up by franchises.

Babar Azam, Shaheen Shah Afridi, Mohammad Rizwan, Shadab Khan, and Haris Rauf are all set to make their BBL appearances this season. In the BPL, 11 Pakistani players have reportedly secured contracts, including Abrar Ahmed, Usman Khan, Shahabzada Farhan, Saim Ayub, Mohammad Nawaz, Faheem Ashraf, Sufiyan Muqeem, Mohammad Amir, Jahandad Khan, and Khawaja Nafay.

The ILT20 will feature Fakhar Zaman, Naseem Shah, and Usman Tariq, who have signed deals with the Desert Vipers. Despite scheduling overlaps, these players are expected to fulfill their league commitments, with adjustments anticipated in January when the PCB is expected to finalize a T20I series in Sri Lanka, followed by home matches against Australia from January 30.

Salman Ali Agha’s exclusion raises eyebrows

While the decision to clear the majority of players was met with optimism, the omission of Pakistan’s current T20I captain Salman Ali Agha has drawn considerable attention.

According to a PTI report, PCB sources clarified that the decision was not disciplinary in nature but instead reflects the player’s limited demand in overseas leagues. Despite leading the national side since December 2024, Salman was not sought after by franchises, and hence, no NOC was processed on his behalf.

The report also noted growing scrutiny over his role clarity and effectiveness in the shortest format, potentially complicating his long-term presence in Pakistan’s T20 strategy. With no team showing interest, his absence from the leagues stands in sharp contrast to the global demand for other Pakistani stars.

Strategic timing before international assignments

The December–January window is a crucial one for Pakistan cricket, as it leads directly into a packed international schedule. The ILT20 will run from December 2 to January 4, while the BBL starts December 14 and concludes on January 25. The BPL is scheduled from December 26, aligning closely with the planned international T20 series.

Franchise commitments and national duty could intersect, but assurances provided by the PCB have helped BBL teams secure full availability of their Pakistani recruits. If the upcoming series is finalized as planned, several players are expected to return early from league duties to rejoin the national squad.
