As Chennai Super Kings prepare for IPL 2026, one of the biggest tactical questions surrounding the franchise is not about form or fitness — but about how to use one of the game’s most influential figures in a rapidly evolving format.
That debate has intensified around MS Dhoni and whether the Impact Player rule fits into Chennai’s plans, particularly given his evolving role within the squad.
Ashwin rejects impact player role for Dhoni
Speaking on his YouTube channel Ash ki Baat, Ravichandran Ashwin made it clear he does not see a part-time role as viable for Dhoni if he is part of the squad.
“I do not agree that he has to stay on the impact list. If he is in the squad, he has to play. If he does not want to, he should not play the entire season, that is it. I am not in agreement with him being an impact player,” he said.
Ashwin’s stance reflects a broader cricketing philosophy — that a player of Dhoni’s stature cannot be slotted into a limited, situational role without diluting his overall impact on the game.
Leadership and on-field value remain central
Beyond the debate over batting position or game time, Ashwin pointed to Dhoni’s wider influence within the team setup, particularly in guiding a relatively new leadership group under Ruturaj Gaikwad.
“If you are making a CSK XI, and Dhoni is in the squad, the debate ends right there. He has to be in the XI. If he does not want to play, he would retire. He has100% belief that he can play. He is practicing from the last three months. He is giving the message that I want to play, you think whatever you want. If he wants to play, it is not possible to go tell him you can’t play. He is not your number six batter, that I will agree. But he can play a double role. He can be the on-field compass for Ruturaj,” he added.
The emphasis, in Ashwin’s view, is less about traditional batting roles and more about Dhoni’s presence as a tactical anchor — shaping field placements, mentoring bowlers, and supporting in-game decision-making.
A shifting role within CSK’s evolving lineup
Chennai’s squad composition heading into IPL 2026 also plays a role in redefining Dhoni’s responsibilities. With added depth in the top order, the need for him to bat higher up the order could be significantly reduced.
“I think Dhoni will have a critical role to support this new bowling line-up on the field. I was also there last year. MS wants that he plays the last three overs. But the top order did not score many times and he had to go up. This time, they have added power in the top order to avoid this. Maybe this time, out of 14 games, he will get to bat higher only in 3-4 games, or else he will only come in the end. His biggest role will be in keeping, setting the field, and giving a shoulder to Ruturaj,” he noted.
This suggests a more defined and situational batting role, with Dhoni primarily operating as a finisher rather than a middle-overs stabiliser.
Balancing physical limitations with finishing ability
Ashwin also acknowledged the physical realities that come with Dhoni’s stage of career, while maintaining that his value as a finisher remains intact.
“I went to watch the practice one day and Samson was fielding. So, thinking of all this, I feel MS will keep wickets and probably bat at seven. If you want to send him at the top, send Dhoni in the powerplay. But again, it totally depends on him. He cannot play the middle overs, but he can surely give you finishing touches. Last year also I saw him from close quarters, he is still able to hit those big shots. Maybe he is not the same player, but he is definitely putting in the efforts,” he stated.
The assessment reinforces a hybrid role — one where Dhoni’s batting is carefully managed, but his match-finishing ability and leadership remain integral.
