Sanju Samson, India wicketkeeper-batter and Rajasthan Royals captain, has made a blockbuster return to Kerala cricket, becoming the most expensive player in Kerala Cricket League (KCL) history. At the July 5 auction, the Kochi Blue Tigers secured Samson’s signature for a record ₹26.6 lakh, far surpassing the league’s previous top bid of ₹7.4 lakh, according to ESPNcricinfo.
Samson entered the auction with a base price of ₹3 lakh. A rapid bidding war saw Kochi spend more than half their ₹50 lakh auction purse to land the 30-year-old India star, signaling both a competitive intent and a strategic branding move.
Why Samson skipped the KCL debut season
The signing marks Samson’s first participation in the KCL, after missing the inaugural edition in 2024 despite being named its brand ambassador. His absence then was due to international commitments, during which he further solidified his place in India’s T20I side, scoring three centuries against Bangladesh and South Africa.
First KCA appearance since Vijay Hazare omission
This return is also notable for being Samson’s first competitive appearance in a Kerala Cricket Association (KCA)-run tournament since his controversial exclusion from the 2024 Vijay Hazare Trophy. The omission was linked to his reported failure to attend a preparatory camp in Wayanad. While the KCA cited disciplinary grounds, Samson later clarified he had formally communicated his unavailability.

Comeback after injury-shortened IPL 2025
Samson’s KCL stint will also be his first match action since IPL 2025, where he managed only nine appearances for Rajasthan Royals due to a side strain. He scored 285 runs at a strike rate of 140.39, with a single half-century, as RR ended the season in ninth place.
KCL’s rising profile as a talent and commercial hub
Samson’s ₹26.6 lakh deal is just the latest signal that the Kerala Cricket League is emerging as a major domestic cricket platform. Earlier this year, 18-year-old spinner Vignesh Puthur made headlines when he was picked by Mumbai Indians for ₹30 lakh after strong performances in KCL trials.
Puthur, who was originally signed by Alleppey Ripples for ₹3.75 lakh in the first KCL season, returns to the league after taking six wickets in five IPL games before injury cut his season short. His KCL return is highly anticipated.
