A new chapter begins: Samson joins CSK in high-profile trade

Sanju Samson has officially donned the iconic yellow jersey of Chennai Super Kings, and the visual alone has sent shockwaves through the IPL universe. In what is already being called one of the most emotional and consequential trades in league history, CSK secured the former Rajasthan Royals captain in a blockbuster deal that has realigned the balance of power heading into IPL 2026.

In a video shared by Chennai Super Kings on their social media platforms, Samson appeared wearing the No. 11 shirt and opened up about the emotional significance of his move. The India wicketkeeper-batter, who has spent nearly his entire IPL career with Rajasthan Royals, described the feeling of wearing CSK colours as both surreal and overwhelming.

“I have been waiting for this day and I’m very fortunate that I am going to wear the yellow jersey,” he said in a social media video.

“It felt like a different energy. I felt like a champion.”

For Samson, who has long been associated with RR’s darker colour palette, the transformation felt symbolic.

“I always am in my dark colours like black, blue, brown, but yellow. Definitely, I think great feeling,” he said.

But it was when he physically put on the jersey that the weight of the move truly hit him.

“To wear that jersey, I never thought about how I would feel after wearing CSK… it felt positive and I felt very happy. It felt different, like a different energy. I felt like a champion. I felt like, okay, wow.”

The moment not only marks a personal turning point for Samson, but a strategic shift for Chennai Super Kings, who appear to be planning for a post-Dhoni era by betting on experience, leadership, and long-term stability.

The trade: Samson in, Jadeja and Curran out

CSK’s acquisition of Samson came at a steep price. The franchise parted ways with two key all-rounders—Ravindra Jadeja and Sam Curran—who head to Rajasthan Royals as part of the three-player deal.

According to the IPL’s media advisory:

“Jadeja, who played for CSK for 12 seasons, is among the most experienced players in the league, having played over 250 games,” the advisory stated. “Rajasthan Royals captain and India wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson will now represent Chennai Super Kings at his existing league fee of INR 18 crore.”

The move also saw Jadeja’s fee revised from INR 18 crore to INR 14 crore to accommodate the trade, while Curran continued on his existing contract worth INR 2.4 crore.

While Jadeja’s return to RR is seen as a homecoming—he started his IPL journey with the franchise back in 2008—the departure of the all-rounder marks the end of a 12-season legacy at CSK, where he became one of the league’s most reliable match-winners.

CSK’s future vision: leadership and legacy

Sanju Samson’s arrival is more than just a personnel change—it’s a signal of CSK’s vision for the future. With 177 IPL matches under his belt, 4,704 runs, three centuries and 26 half-centuries, Samson brings experience, class, and composure.

His leadership credentials, proven during multiple seasons as RR’s captain, are expected to be integral to CSK’s long-term plans. The move may also ease the transition as MS Dhoni nears the final stretch of his legendary career.

Samson’s own desire for a new challenge was reportedly a key factor behind the trade. While it came as a surprise to many—given his deep-rooted ties to Rajasthan—the pull of CSK’s legacy, and the opportunity to potentially lead one of IPL’s most iconic teams, proved too strong to resist.

A yellow dawn for CSK—and for Samson

As the dust settles on one of the most dramatic trade windows in IPL history, one image stands out: Sanju Samson, in CSK yellow, grinning, grounded, and ready.

A player long celebrated for his elegance, resilience, and quiet consistency now begins a bold new chapter—on the brightest stage, with the brightest jersey.
