Sarfaraz Ahmed steps into new leadership role with Quetta Gladiators
Quetta Gladiators, the champions of the 2019 HBL Pakistan Super League (PSL), are currently placed fifth in HBL PSL X, having won one and lost two of their first three matches. After fixtures in Rawalpindi and Karachi, the team has now arrived in Lahore, ready for their next five home games.
With training sessions underway at the LCCA Ground — recently a host venue for the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup Qualifier 2025 — the Gladiators are looking to bounce back strongly this season.
New chapter for Sarfaraz Ahmed with Quetta Gladiators
Having led Pakistan to titles in the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup (2006) and ICC Champions Trophy (2017), and captaining Quetta to their maiden HBL PSL title in 2019, Sarfaraz Ahmed now steps into a new chapter as Team Director of the Gladiators.
Speaking to PCB Digital during a training session, Sarfaraz said, “It is an exciting role for me, and I am trying to learn as I have previously worked as a mentor in the two Champions Cup events for team Dolphins. Transitioning from player to coach is not easy, but evolving your skillset is essential.”
Reflections on PSL growth and Gladiators’ future
Sarfaraz praised the PSL’s growth, stating, “The league has grown immensely with each passing year. A lot of effort from the PCB management and other stakeholders has gone into making it a success.”
Reflecting on Quetta’s 2019 triumph, he added, “Winning HBL PSL in 2019 was a memorable moment. After consistent playoff appearances, the perfect team combination helped us clinch the title in Karachi. We aim to replicate that success this season.”
Strong overseas selections and young talent spotlighted
Commenting on the team’s 2025 roster, Sarfaraz remarked, “Unfortunately, we didn’t perform well over the past three years, but this season our overseas picks are better suited for T20 cricket. We are hopeful of a strong performance.”
He also highlighted the emerging talent of Hasan Nawaz and Khawaja Nafay: “Hasan is a promising player with a great opportunity to enhance his skills. Khawaja Nafay, picked in the Emerging category last year, is also set to grow through this platform.”
Backing Saud Shakeel’s leadership
On new captain Saud Shakeel, Sarfaraz said, “Saud has full backing from the team. He showed strong leadership in our first win. Though results haven’t gone our way since, we have complete faith in him to guide us forward.”
With Sarfaraz’s leadership off the field and a revamped squad, the Quetta Gladiators are determined to turn their season around and reignite their championship hopes in HBL PSL X.
