Iyer breaks silence with update from Sydney hospital
Indian cricketer Shreyas Iyer has issued his first public statement since being hospitalised with a serious abdominal injury sustained during the third ODI against Australia. The 30-year-old, who was rushed to the ICU in Sydney after internal bleeding was detected, shared a health update on Instagram, confirming that he is recovering steadily.
“I’m currently in recovery process and getting better, every passing day. I’m deeply grateful to see all the kind wishes and support I’ve received – it truly means a lot. Thank you for keeping me in your thoughts,” Iyer wrote in his Instagram story.
The injury occurred on October 25 during a crucial moment in the field, when Iyer made a diving effort at backward point to catch Alex Carey off Harshit Rana’s bowling. While the catch was successful, the dive caused a significant impact to his abdomen, resulting in an immediate medical emergency.
BCCI confirms lacerated spleen and internal bleeding
Following the incident, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) released a detailed medical update, confirming the nature and extent of the injury.
“Shreyas Iyer sustained a blunt injury to his abdomen, resulting in a laceration of his spleen with internal bleeding on 25th October during the third ODI against Australia,” the BCCI stated.
The seriousness of the condition required immediate attention. Iyer was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit where the bleeding was brought under control.
Latest scan shows significant improvement
The BCCI provided further clarity on Iyer’s recovery path in a follow-up statement released after a scan conducted on October 28.
“The injury was promptly identified, and the bleeding was immediately arrested. His condition is now stable, and he continues to be under observation. A repeat scan done on Tuesday, 28th October, has shown significant improvement, and Shreyas is on the road to recovery,” the board confirmed.
They also reiterated that his rehabilitation will continue under close watch.
“The BCCI Medical Team, in consultation with specialists in Sydney and India, will continue to monitor his progress,” the statement added.
Timeline for return remains uncertain
Although initial assessments suggested a recovery period of approximately three weeks, medical sources have indicated that Iyer’s time away from the game may extend longer. As a result, he is expected to miss the upcoming three-match ODI series against South Africa starting November 30, and his availability for the January series against New Zealand also remains uncertain.
Despite the setback, Iyer’s message and the BCCI’s update indicate that he is trending positively in his recovery. His return will be closely watched, with India keen to have him back in full fitness ahead of a busy cricket calendar.
