Sourav Ganguly has addressed concerns over a potential conflict of interest following his appointment as Delhi Capitals Head Coach for the 2027 Indian Premier League (IPL) season, while retaining his position as President of the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB).

The former India Captain, whose appointment was announced on October 6, will succeed Hemang Badani in his first assignment as Head Coach of an IPL franchise.

His return to a leading role at Delhi Capitals comes alongside a change in the franchise’s operational management, with co-owner JSW Group assuming responsibility for cricketing decisions.

Ganguly addresses questions over dual responsibilities

Ganguly’s appointment has prompted questions about whether his responsibilities at a state cricket association can be held alongside a senior coaching position in the IPL.

Speaking to reporters outside Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata, former India Captain, Delhi Capitals Head Coach and CAB President Sourav Ganguly said: “I’ve got the order of ombudsman.”

The former BCCI President previously held a similar combination of responsibilities in 2019, when he served as CAB President while working as an Advisor to Delhi Capitals. That arrangement received clearance from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

The latest development places renewed attention on the governance arrangements surrounding senior cricket administrators who also hold positions with professional franchises.

JSW assumes control of Delhi Capitals’ cricket operations

The leadership change at Delhi Capitals coincides with a transition under the franchise’s shared ownership structure.

JSW Group and GMR Group alternate responsibility for cricket operations in two-year cycles. With GMR’s latest period concluding in 2026, JSW is set to oversee the franchise’s cricketing decisions through 2029.

Ganguly’s appointment is among the first significant changes under the new management cycle.

His relationship with Delhi Capitals dates back to 2019, when he initially joined as an Advisor. He returned in 2023 as Director of Cricket, working with the franchise during Ricky Ponting’s tenure as Head Coach.

Following changes to Delhi’s coaching structure, Ganguly took on a broader role as Director of Cricket at JSW Sports.

His latest appointment moves him from overseeing cricket operations into direct responsibility for the IPL team’s coaching and performance.

Ganguly builds on Pretoria Capitals coaching experience

While IPL 2027 will mark Ganguly’s debut as a Head Coach in the competition, he has already gained experience in a comparable role with Pretoria Capitals in South Africa’s SA20.

He guided the franchise, which is part of the wider Capitals cricket network, to the SA20 final in 2026, where Pretoria finished as runners-up.

Ganguly has also been associated with Delhi Capitals’ women’s cricket operations, having previously served as Director of Cricket across the franchise’s men’s and women’s teams.

His appointment reflects the growing role of senior cricket executives and former international players across interconnected franchise operations in different leagues.

Delhi Capitals prepare for IPL 2027

Ganguly takes charge of a franchise seeking to improve its recent IPL results after missing the playoffs in consecutive seasons.

Delhi Capitals finished sixth in the 2026 standings, leaving the new coaching leadership with the task of rebuilding the team’s competitiveness.

The squad includes Captain Axar Patel and KL Rahul, while Rishabh Pant’s return from Lucknow Super Giants adds another experienced Indian player to the franchise’s plans.

Attention has also turned to the composition of Ganguly’s support staff. Former international cricketers Yuvraj Singh, Chaminda Vaas and Amit Mishra have been linked with potential coaching roles, although Delhi Capitals has not officially announced their appointments.

Ganguly expressed confidence ahead of the new campaign, adding: “Delhi will play well. I’m looking forward to it.”

With JSW beginning its latest management cycle and Ganguly taking charge of the coaching setup, Delhi Capitals enters IPL 2027 with a new leadership structure and the objective of returning to the playoffs.
