Governance crisis threatens future of US cricket and Olympic inclusion
USA Cricket is facing a deepening governance crisis as board chair Venu Pisike continues to defy mounting pressure from both the International Cricket Council (ICC) and the United States Olympic & Paralympic Committee (USOPC) to overhaul the sport’s leadership in the country, according to multiple reports, including in Times of India.
ICC and USOPC demand leadership overhaul
The governance dispute has been building for more than a year. In July 2024, the ICC issued a formal notice to USA Cricket over continued non-compliance with governance standards. In response, the global body established a normalization committee to help guide structural reforms.
Tensions peaked during a high-level meeting in Los Angeles on June 18, 2025, when ICC officials explicitly urged Pisike and other board members to resign. The ICC’s directive echoed a parallel demand from the USOPC, which emphasized that cricket’s Olympic future hinges on USAC aligning with global governance norms.
The USOPC’s senior governance advisor, David Patterson, reinforced this position in a letter to USAC CEO Johnathan Atkeison, advocating for the resignation and replacement of the board’s independent directors.
Pisike rejects resignations, pushes back
Instead of complying, Pisike has advised board members not to resign. He even blocked the resignation of independent director Pintoo Shah, who had stepped down in line with the ICC and USOPC recommendations.
Further inflaming tensions, player-director Nadia Gruny — who had expressed her willingness to resign and support the transition process — was reportedly abruptly removed from the board, sidelining one of the few voices open to compromise.
Attempt to sever MLC partnership adds fuel to fire
In a somewhat expected move during a July 13 board meeting, Pisike introduced a resolution to terminate USA Cricket’s longstanding agreement with American Cricket Enterprises (ACE), the commercial partner behind Major League Cricket (MLC). This came just 10 days after USA Cricket issued a media release stating:
“USA Cricket has formally communicated certain concerns to ACE and requested timely and transparent responses. This includes, but is not limited to, ACE’s contractual obligations to financially support the USA National Teams and to develop critical cricket infrastructure as envisioned by the contract.”
The resolution ultimately failed after several board members exited the meeting in protest, citing ongoing pressure from the ICC and USOPC to preserve stability and honor prior commitments. However, sources indicate Pisike may attempt to revive the resolution in the near future — creating more uncertainty around MLC’s status and the governing body’s relationship with its key partners.
Future of US cricket hangs in the balance
The turmoil leaves USA Cricket at a crossroads. The ICC has warned of potential suspension, possibly as soon as this coming weekend during the ICC’s AGM in Singapore, while the USOPC continues to tie cricket’s Olympic legitimacy to USAC governance reforms. With the board chair doubling down on resistance, and the governing structures paralyzed by infighting, the broader future of the sport in the U.S. — from grassroots development to Olympic representation — is clearly in jeopardy.
Unless a breakthrough is achieved soon, USA Cricket risks alienating not just its international partners but also derailing the momentum gained through the success of Major League Cricket and cricket’s long-awaited return to the Olympic stage in Los Angeles 2028.
