Nearly three months after Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s (RCB) historic IPL title win turned tragic, team icon Virat Kohli has issued his first detailed statement addressing the deadly stampede that took place during the franchise’s victory celebration at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium on June 4.
The incident — which claimed 11 lives and left dozens injured — occurred when an estimated 2.5 lakh fans overwhelmed the stadium grounds after open invitations were posted on social media. The massive crowd, far beyond official capacity, caused a fatal surge as supporters rushed to catch a glimpse of Kohli and other RCB players.

Tragedy prompts reforms and new safety initiative from RCB
The stampede drew widespread public scrutiny and triggered an official inquiry, which revealed that RCB had failed to obtain the necessary permissions to host such a large-scale gathering. Authorities cited poor crowd control measures and the unregulated nature of the event as contributing factors. The franchise has stated that the initiative will work closely with the Indian Premier League, Karnataka State Cricket Association, and local stadium authorities to implement these measures at scale.
