Cricket South Africa Emerging women’s team are set to return to international cricket when they play host to the Thailand women’s side in the month of September.
The SA Women’s Emerging side will play their third series this year against the rising Asian outfit in a five-match ODI and three-match WT20 series at Senwes Park in Potchefstroom. The tour is scheduled to commence with the first ODI on Sunday, 5 September and run until the final fixture on Sunday, 19 September.
The tour will be the cornerstone of a training camp that marks the start of preparations for the team’s busy summer campaign, which promises to be a testing period for the players who will be looking to stake their claim for a spot in the Momentum Proteas Women’s World Cup team.
For the visitors it will be a welcome return to international cricket, who saw a number of their scheduled international matches, included planned tours, cancelled in 2020 due to the pandemic.
Thailand senior women’s is expected to have a strong squad to field against the SA Emerging team that produced some stellar performances in their recent tour to Zimbabwe. The visitors will use this tour as preparations for their all-important 2021 Women’s World Cup Qualifiers taking place in the month of December in Sri Lanka where teams will compete for the 3 available spots into the main draw of this marquee event.
This will be the first time an international women’s cricket fixture has been held at Senwes Park since 2019.
Welcoming the announcement, SA Emerging Women coach Dinesha Devnarain said: “It goes without saying that we are pleased to see this series given the green light. Thailand will be a good challenge and the team and I are absolutely delighted at the prospect of playing again.
It’s been some time since we’ve played so we’re definitely looking forward to getting back out there. We have worked hard over the winter period, now we need games to assess where we are at as a team.”
