  3. Role Purpose:
    • The BCCI is seeking to strengthen and shape the strategic direction of its Sports Science and Medicine department with the appointment of an experienced and progressive Head of Sports Science and Medicine.

    • The post holder will work with the Head of Cricket at NCA to provide strategic performance planning and management advice. This individual will line manage the Head of Physiotherapy (NCA), Team India Head of Physiotherapy, Head S&C (NCA), Team India S&C. The selected individual will also work closely with, Coaches of the National Team and the NCA, Operations Staff of NCA and Head of Cricket Education to ensure that SS&M services are integrated across the game leading to optimal performance impact in the short, medium and long term. The post holder will also lead BCCI’s Sport’s performance relationship with external stakeholders.

    • This new position requires a suitably qualified person below the age of 60, to provide the highest degree of professionalism and ability to lead a medical and physiotherapy team entrusted with top level performance in all aspects of injury prevention, management and rehabilitation. This will include responsibility for player screening, nutrition, physical development and the adoption of relevant new technologies, services. It is anticipated that the post holder will develop relationships with world-class institutions to provide advice on the medical management and research into sports injuries and their prevention.
  4. Key Accountabilities:
    Summary Accountabilities

    Primary:
    • Development of National Strategy / framework for improving standards of science and medicine, clinical and medical governance, clinical service delivery, medical/welfare research, risk management, specialist advice, communication.
    • Advise BCCI on strategies and priorities to predict immediate and long-term player welfare
    Secondary:
    • The delivery of the following programmes: Injury prevention/risk reduction; athlete development and research, player recovery and support during rehabilitation, research and innovation, illness and wellness related to international travel / representation.

    Key Responsibilities
    • Provide strategic and operational leadership of Science and Medicine services to all BCCI Elite Cricket and NCA programs (people, finances, processes).
    • Responsible for the performance management and development of the Sports Science and Medicine Team in order to create a high performing unit.
    • Develop a working Vision, Mission, Objectives and strategies for the department.
    • Work closely with the Head Cricket NCA, Head of Cricket Education, and National Coaches to develop and deliver integrated support programmes that meet the performance and development needs of Indian players.
    • Responsible for the performance benchmarking and quality management processes for all aspects of BCCI Sports Science and Medicine services based on industry ‘best practice’.
    • Prepare and submit Sports Science and Medicine budgets and manage their performance throughout the year.
    • Lead the development and growth of the Research Wing in the Sports Science Department
    • Setup auditory and performance management processesfor the BCCI Sports Science and Medicine Department
    • Review the contractual arrangements with centrally contracted players to promote physical preparation and minimize the risk of injury.
    • Develop Long Term Athletic Development processes for junior Indian Cricketers.
    • Drive the CPD and Education programs for the Sports Science and Medicine department of the BCCI.
    • Act as a media spokesperson on performance matters. Documentation and Communication
    • Use of technology to improve the effectiveness of information management – generate MIS.
    • Maintain accurate and concise records- must be adept with computer programs and office software relevant to work.
  5. Operating Environment:
    • Challenging working environment. Prioritising workload and managing time given the often-competing demands of different players and staff. The person will be working as a part of a multi-disciplinary support Team.
    • Setting and managing the expectations of players, Sports Science and coaching staff, and administrators with regard to the results of injury prevention and treatment programs.
    • Maintaining effective lines of communication with all key stakeholders- other NCA and Team India Coaches, Physios, S & C team, administrators at the State Associations, NCA and cricket operations, and state coaches.

  8. Qualifications, Experience, Knowledge & Skills:
    Essential
    • Extensive experience of leading and managing multi disciplinary teams in high performance sport.
    • Extensive experience of developing and implementing strategic plans.
    • Extensive experience as a science or medicine practitioner delivering support to high performance teams in professional and / or Olympic sport.
    • Postgraduate degree in a sports science or medicine discipline.
    • Current professional accreditation / license in a sports science or medicine discipline.
    • Experience of conducting performance focused research in a sports science or medicine discipline.
    • Experience and understanding of the long-term physical development of players.
    • Experience in leadership to support and partner with regional performance and sports institutes.
    Desirable
    • Sport & Exercise Medicine Specialist Recognition.
    • Held previous Chief Medical Officer or Medical director position.
    • An established credibility in National and International sports medicine.
    • Experience of the delivery of Medical and Clinical Governance within a similar organisation.

    • Computer literate with excellent written and oral communication skills including Microsoft Outlook, word, excel, power point, and associated video capture and analysis software.
