Bungendore Bunyips first ever junior team set to enter Cricket ACT competition
Sydney Thunder’s Chris Green described the formation of the Bungendore Bunyips team that will play in a Cricket ACT Stage 1 junior competition as a pleasing legacy from a summer in which the ACT was exposed to high octane KFC Big Bash League matches and a gripping women’s Ashes Test.
Green, who starred for Thunder throughout BBL|11, said it was exciting to learn the Bunyips would be represented in the five-team transition competition which starts this Saturday and also includes the likes of Weston Creek and Tuggeranong.
“It’s exciting to hear about the growth of cricket, and hearing Bungendore Bunyips has formed its first ever junior team is something to celebrate,” said Green.
“Everyone who is involved in the W/BBL want to inspire children to love cricket and to play the game, so this is a really good news story.
“I hope the boys and girls playing in the team have a lot of fun, form great friendships – and support Sydney Thunder.”
The transition competition prepares children who have played in the Woolworths Cricket Blast program to play junior cricket. Cricket NSW’s Cricket Manager Southern Inland Adrian Brunker described the four-week comp as a “taster”.
“I see this as a starting point to help grow cricket in Bungendore,” he said after presenting the team with a playing kit last Friday.
“It would be great to see a proper junior pathway established allowing not only Bungendore kids to participate, but also one that provides the many kids who live on farms and properties around the town with the opportunity to access the game as well.
“Through participation it would be also great to lobby for better cricket infrastructure to be established in the community. There is also a developing relationship with the school that we are keen to foster.”
Club official David Boyd, who’s nine-year-old daughter Kaylani will play for the Bunyips this weekend, said the formation of the team was due to collective hard work.
“You need good people around you,” was his advice for anyone wanting to form a kid’s team. “I haven’t done this on my own, I’ve had people who have done just as much – or more – than me.”
