Dynamic all-rounder Will Sutherland has pledged his commitment to the Melbourne Renegades for a further two seasons.

On the back of a breakout Big Bash campaign, Sutherland has re-signed with the club until the end of BBL|14.

The 23-year-old is one of Australian cricket’s brightest prospects, with his ability to impact in all three facets of the game and as an emerging leader.

Sutherland scored 210 runs for the Renegades in BBL|12 – at a strike-rate of 150 – alongside seven wickets and some incredible displays of athleticism in the field, to play a key role for the team in its return to finals action.

His golden summer saw him finish the Sheffield Shield as the competition’s leading wicket-taker (41) and deputising as Victorian captain in the back half of the summer.

“To sign on for another two years is really exciting and hopefully we can go bigger and better next year,” Sutherland said.

“It was nice to contribute the way I did this season. A few things clicked with both bat and ball which was good.

“I’ve really appreciated the faith the Renegades have shown in me. It was nice to repay it in a few games this year the way I did, and hopefully I can continue to do that.

“We’re building nicely as a group and I’m looking forward to being part of it over the next couple of years. I think every year you’ve got to believe you can win it, that’s got to be the goal and there’s no reason why we can’t.”

Sutherland has been a Renegade since BBL|07 and has played 44 matches since making his Big Bash debut in the club’s title-winning BBL|08 campaign.

He settled into a finishing role in the batting line-up this season – smashing 12 sixes, and a new high score of 42 not out – and was often trusted to bowl key overs in the powerplay or at the death.

Sutherland joins club legend Aaron Finch in re-signing following BBL|12, both on two-year deals.

“Will had an outstanding season and we’re delighted to have him commit to our club for two more years,” Melbourne Renegades General Manager, James Rosengarten, said.

“Over the past couple of seasons, we’ve seen glimpses of Will’s potential with bat, ball and in the field. It was great to see him take the next step with his game in BBL|12, become a key member of our team and deliver some match-winning contributions in high-pressure situations.

“There’s no doubt Will is one of Australia’s best all-round talents. We look forward to helping him continue to grow as a player and watch him contributing to the Renegades winning games of cricket in the years to come.”

BBL|13 Squad (so far): Nic Maddinson (c), Aaron Finch, Mackenzie Harvey, Shaun Marsh, Kane Richardson, Tom Rogers, Will Sutherland, Jon Wells, Adam Zampa.
