The Head of Cricket is a long-standing role, supported by a strong interest in the game from the student intake from Reception through to Year 13. The School is ambitious for its most successful cricketers – some of whom go on to play at full County level- while also encouraging of the students who simply want to enjoy the sport at a recreational level. The vacancy provides a great opportunity for an experienced practitioner to build a wide-ranging programme. The scope of the position is extensive, and the successful candidate will bring imagination, innovation and creative thinking. It is a potentially career-defining opportunity for the right person to make a lasting impact on the game.
Within the school, the Head of Cricket will be responsible for leading a programme which will inspire pupils and staff to participate, aspire and excel, both in curriculum Games and the co-curricular programme . This will include establishing, and monitoring, an industry-leading coaching provision, and overseeing all aspects of player – and coach – development in the school. The successful candidate will coach at all levels across the school, inside and beyond the curriculum, and also support the most aspirational athletes in their quest for representative honours. S/he/they will lead from the front. This will include managing the competition programme, and supporting logistics, ensuring that an ambitious, and appropriate, high quality experience is provided for all pupils. (The Head of Cricket will also be expected to contribute to one or more aspects of the school’s Autumn/Spring Term sports programme, in support of the activities of the wider Sports Department.)
The successful candidate will have a significant background – and status – in Cricket, as a player and coach. Experience in schools is desirable, though not essential, as are coaching qualifications, or the willingness to acquire them. The hours will be flexible, reflecting the varied nature of the position, but will involve a strong commitment to after-school, weekend and school holiday activities. Candidates will be expected to work with school teams on every Saturday during term times, throughout the year.
Cricket at Nottingham High School is a wide-ranging project, that extends beyond delivering the school programme. The successful candidate will be capable of wide, strategic thinking resulting in a range of impacts and partnerships that will enhance the school’s reputation in the game, and the community. S/he/they will also ensure that the School’s cricketing facilities are used to maximum effect, both by the school’s own students and also by the wider community. Establishing collaborations with other schools, clubs and performance programmes will be an important part of this.
There is an exciting opportunity to introduce new initiatives, and to further develop the game in the area. This will require the Head of Cricket to show a range of skills, including the capacity to build positive relationships with a variety of other stakeholders. Entrepreneurial ability will be important in attracting and developing new cricket activities and competitions at Valley Road and in our sports hall / nets. This includes the capacity to establish, and manage, an extensive programme of outreach activity, in support both of pupil recruitment and of the school’s charitable purpose.
The successful candidate will be a role model for pupils, and an ambassador for the school in the Cricket community. An important requirement of the position will be the ability to establish a positive reputation for the game in the school amongst pupils, parents and the wider Cricket community.
