The landmark fixture at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium represents a major step in Cricket Australia’s long-term international growth strategy, with India identified as a key market to expand the league’s audience, commercial footprint and global profile. The match was officially unveiled on Friday at the Melbourne Cricket Ground by Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the latter’s visit to Australia.

Speaking at the announcement, Modi highlighted the role cricket can continue to play in strengthening ties between the two countries, saying: “Let us play together, let us win together.”
Cricket Australia targets long-term growth in India
The Chennai opener will take place following day four of the first Test between Australia and New Zealand in Perth, with the Renegades designated as the home side. The match will be broadcast live across Australia by Seven, 7plus, Kayo Sports and Fox Cricket, while JioStar will deliver coverage throughout India, reflecting Cricket Australia’s ambition to maximise the fixture’s reach in both markets.
The governing body is also planning for a full house at the 38,000-capacity M.A. Chidambaram Stadium, with travel packages expected to be offered to supporters as part of a wider effort to create an authentic Big Bash experience for Indian fans. Cricket Australia believes taking the competition directly into the world’s biggest cricket market will accelerate fan engagement, increase awareness of the league and its clubs, and strengthen the value of its commercial partnerships.
Alistair Dobson, Cricket Australia General Manager of Big Bash Leagues, said in an official statement: “Our sport has such an authentic connection in India. This game is also part of a much bigger initiative across both our governments and shows that cricket is a connector for both our countries, and that both the Australian and Indian governments see that and want to be part of it.”
He added: “We’re hugely excited by the opportunity and we expect the match will be the most-watched game in Australian domestic league history for any sport.”
Dobson also said: “We’re grateful for the support of the Australian government and the Centre for Australia-India Relations in helping bring this historic match to life.”
Commercial strategy extends beyond a single fixture
Beyond the significance of hosting the league’s first overseas match, the Chennai fixture reflects Cricket Australia’s broader ambition to strengthen the BBL’s international commercial position. The governing body believes the competition already enjoys a substantial following in India and sees staging a match there as an opportunity to unlock further growth in media audiences, sponsorship value and long-term commercial partnerships.
The move also follows a wider trend across global sport, with leading competitions increasingly taking marquee events into overseas markets to build international fan bases. Cricket Australia believes the BBL has a distinctive identity that can resonate with supporters beyond Australia, while the existing broadcast partnership with JioStar provides an established platform to grow the competition in India.
Speaking to Australian Financial Review Weekend, Dobson said: “The popularity of the BBL extends far beyond our shores.”
He continued: “Continuing to build our game in new markets and connect with fans in really powerful ways is about the long-term growth of our league. That shows up in the value of our media rights, the opportunity for sponsors to connect with bigger and growing audiences, and for our players and our clubs to uncover new opportunities.”
Looking ahead to the event itself, he added: “We’d also love to see BBL fans from around India travelling into Chennai to the game. We want to fill the stadium, and we want it to be a true BBL experience with lots of people and colour and noise and music and great cricket. We think it’ll be pretty historic.”
The Chennai fixture also comes as Cricket Australia continues exploring the future commercial structure of the Big Bash, including broader discussions around external investment into BBL clubs, although those conversations remain separate from the decision to stage the season opener in India.
Cricket diplomacy provides the backdrop
The announcement followed a day in which cricket featured prominently during discussions between the Australian and Indian governments.
On Thursday, speaking at a joint press conference with Prime Minister Albanese in Melbourne, Modi used cricket to describe the growing relationship between the two countries.
He said: “Today, as we are in Melbourne, the sporting capital of the world, not talking about sports would be like winning the toss in a cricket match but never starting the game.”
Modi continued: “Cricket is the diplomatic language of India-Australia relations. That is why our meetings also feel like cricket. The agenda has the focus of a one-day match, decisions are as fast as a T20, and the partnership is as long and deep as a Test match.”

Looking ahead, he also pointed to future opportunities for collaboration through major international events.
He said: “In the coming years, major sporting events such as the Olympics and the Commonwealth Games will be held in both countries. With this, our sports cooperation will increase, and many possibilities for investment in sports infrastructure will arise.”
Later on Thursday, Modi highlighted the broader outcomes of the bilateral discussions in a post on X, writing: “Held wide-ranging discussions with Prime Minister Albanese in Melbourne this afternoon. The India-Australia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership of 2022 has continuously expanded the scope of our cooperation. We have now decided to accelerate work on the Comprehensive Economic Cooperation, with unprecedented progress over the past few years. We talked about how to add more vigour to trade and investment linkages. The Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement (CECA) will be balanced, ambitious and beneficial for both countries.”

Historic milestone for the Big Bash
The Chennai opener will become the first official Big Bash League fixture to be played outside Australia and the first overseas domestic T20 league match to be staged in India. The venue was selected with support from the Board of Control for Cricket in India, with Chennai identified as an ideal location because of its strong cricket culture and passionate fan base.
The BBL also underlined the scale of its ambitions in a post on its official X account, stating: “🇮🇳 #BBL16 on the global stage 📈 The most-watched game in Australian domestic sports league history is expected when the @RenegadesBBL take on the @ScorchersBBL in India.”
