Delhi Capitals have strengthened their backroom staff ahead of IPL 2026, bringing in former Ireland international John Mooney as Fielding Coach, with the franchise confirming the appointment through an official announcement on X.

Delhi Capitals confirm Mooney appointment for IPL 2026

The franchise formally introduced Mooney to fans with a social media post that read, “Adding some Irish steel to the Dilli defence 🛡️ Welcome, John Mooney! 💙❤️,” as Delhi Capitals signalled a fresh addition to their support staff setup.

Mooney steps into the role following changes to the fielding department, taking over responsibilities previously handled by Anton Roux and Gnaneswara Rao during the last season.

Coaching group reshaped ahead of new campaign

The 44-year-old joins a coaching unit led by Head Coach Hemang Badani, alongside Bowling Coach Munaf Patel, Assistant Coach Ian Bell, and Director Of Cricket Venugopal Rao.

While Mooney becomes a new addition, Rao is expected to continue contributing within the fielding setup, ensuring continuity as well as fresh expertise within the department.

Notably, Kevin Pietersen, who had served as a mentor in the previous season, is no longer part of the coaching structure for IPL 2026.

International experience adds depth to fielding unit

Mooney arrives with a varied coaching background across international teams, having previously worked with Afghanistan and West Indies, in addition to a short stint with Ireland Women.

His time with Afghanistan included a landmark phase when the side made its Test debut, highlighting his experience in high-pressure and transitional environments.

He also holds advanced coaching qualifications, having completed Level 1, 2, and 3 certifications through the England and Wales Cricket Board since retiring from international cricket.

From World Cup performer to IPL coaching role

During his playing career, Mooney represented Ireland across formats, featuring in 64 ODIs and 27 T20Is between 2006 and 2015.

He was part of multiple global tournaments, including three ODI World Cups and two T20 World Cups, and remains widely recognised for scoring the winning runs in Ireland’s historic victory over England at the 2011 ODI World Cup.

His transition into coaching has seen him build a profile that now leads to his first role within an IPL franchise setup.

Delhi Capitals look to improve after near-miss season

Delhi Capitals are yet to secure their first IPL title and will enter the 2026 season aiming to improve on last year’s fifth-place finish, where they narrowly missed out on a playoff spot.

With the tournament schedule underway, the franchise is set to begin its campaign against Lucknow Super Giants on April 1, followed by fixtures against Mumbai Indians, Gujarat Titans, and Chennai Super Kings in the opening phase.
