England captain Jos Buttler denies plans to boycott Afghanistan match

Must Read

England men’s cricket captain Jos Buttler has dismissed the idea of boycotting their Champions Trophy match against Afghanistan. Buttler argued that a boycott would not address underlying issues and called for resolving political concerns through dialogue rather than excluding teams from competitions, as reported by Express News.

Earlier, more than 160 British politicians urged the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) to boycott the February 26 match in Lahore. The request stems from Afghanistan’s political climate since the Taliban regained power in 2021, which has led to restrictions on women’s participation in sports.

Buttler drew parallels with the 2003 Cricket World Cup, where England faced criticism for refusing to play Zimbabwe under Robert Mugabe’s regime. He stressed that while politicians might have different views, players should focus on the sport and avoid allowing political issues to disrupt cricket.

Before the Champions Trophy, England is scheduled to play a series against India, comprising five T20 matches and three One Day Internationals.

England’s Champions Trophy campaign begins with a match against Australia, with their game against Afghanistan set for February 26 in Lahore.
