Hardik Pandya to Punjab Kings? Arshdeep Singh, Marcus Stoinis and Mohsin Khan linked in IPL 2027 trade talks

Mumbai Indians and Punjab Kings are close to a major player exchange, with a potential Marcus Stoinis–Mohsin Khan swap also emerging as franchises prepare for the IPL 2027 retention deadline.

Mumbai Indians and Punjab Kings are closing in on a major IPL 2027 trade that could see Hardik Pandya move to Punjab, with India fast bowler Arshdeep Singh and wicketkeeper-batter Vishnu Vinod heading to Mumbai in exchange, according to a report by Sportstar.

Negotiations between senior officials of the two franchises have progressed significantly, with the proposed exchange nearing agreement and documentation expected to be processed by IPL officials ahead of the November 17 retention deadline.

The potentially blockbuster swap could also reshape Punjab’s bowling plans. The franchise is considering a separate exchange that would send Australian all-rounder Marcus Stoinis to Lucknow Super Giants in return for left-arm pacer Mohsin Khan, creating a possible chain of transactions involving three IPL teams.

Mohsin would offer Punjab an Indian left-arm pace option to help offset Arshdeep’s departure, although his injury history remains a consideration. Hardik’s arrival, meanwhile, could give the franchise greater flexibility in its all-round resources and make Stoinis available for a return to Lucknow.

Stoinis joined Punjab for ₹11 crore (approx. US$1.16 million) at the IPL 2025 mega auction after spending three seasons with Lucknow. Mohsin made his mark during Lucknow’s inaugural IPL campaign in 2022, claiming 14 wickets in nine matches.

Why Mumbai Indians want Arshdeep Singh

Mumbai’s pursuit of Arshdeep reflects its search for a frontline fast bowler to strengthen a squad already featuring several established batting options.

The franchise has Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Varma and Ryan Rickelton among its batting resources, while the performances of Trent Boult and Deepak Chahar during IPL 2026 have raised questions about its pace-bowling depth.

Arshdeep would offer Mumbai an experienced Indian left-arm seamer who has established himself as a leading wicket-taker for India in T20 internationals. Vishnu Vinod’s inclusion would provide additional wicketkeeping and batting cover.

For Punjab, the attraction lies in Hardik’s ability to contribute with both bat and ball, giving the franchise an established Indian all-rounder as it seeks to build on its recent progress under Head Coach Ricky Ponting.

The exchange would also represent another significant move in Hardik’s IPL career. He began his career with Mumbai in 2015 before leaving to captain Gujarat Titans, whom he led to the title in 2022 and another final in 2023.

Mumbai brought him back ahead of IPL 2024 and appointed him Captain in place of Rohit Sharma. The five-time champions subsequently missed the playoffs in two of Hardik’s three seasons in charge.

According to PTI, both Mumbai and Punjab are keen to complete the proposed trade, although negotiations have yet to produce a final agreement. An IPL source told PTI: “Talks are going on. Both parties (MI and PBKS) are keen to make it happen. Having said that, it is not a done deal yet.”

Hardik Pandya set for playing role under Shreyas Iyer

A move to Punjab would not automatically give Hardik another opportunity to lead an IPL franchise.

Shreyas Iyer is expected to continue as Punjab Kings Captain after guiding the team to the IPL 2025 final, its first appearance in the title match since 2014.

An IPL source told PTI: “With Iyer as captain, Hardik will come in only as a player and that has been conveyed clearly.”

Rohit Sharma is also in contention to resume the Mumbai Indians Captaincy for IPL 2027, potentially ending Hardik’s tenure in the role regardless of whether the proposed exchange is completed.

Mumbai Indians reject Suryakumar Yadav trade speculation

Another prominent Mumbai Indians player, Suryakumar Yadav, has attracted interest from Lucknow Super Giants as franchises assess their leadership options ahead of IPL 2027.

According to SportsTak, Lucknow had explored the possibility of acquiring Suryakumar as a captaincy candidate, adding to speculation about changes to Mumbai’s established Indian core.

Amid the discussion about his future, Suryakumar shared an Instagram Story featuring Mumbai Indians branding, a gesture that attracted attention as questions circulated about his position at the franchise.

However, according to Cricbuzz, Mumbai Indians have ruled out any exchange involving Suryakumar and have not entered discussions about trading the India T20I Captain.

MI sources said: “SKY is not up for trade, and there have been no discussions, nor will there be.”

Suryakumar has been one of Mumbai’s most important batters since rejoining the franchise in 2018. He amassed 717 runs in 16 matches during IPL 2025, although his tally dropped to 270 runs in 13 appearances the following season.

Retaining him would preserve a key part of Mumbai’s batting line-up while the franchise considers changes elsewhere in its squad.

Rajasthan Royals and other franchises feature in Mumbai’s trade discussions

Mumbai’s interest in Arshdeep has emerged alongside discussions involving other IPL franchises as the team evaluates ways to reinforce its squad.

Rajasthan Royals have featured in those conversations, with Yashasvi Jaiswal and Ravi Bishnoi among the players linked to possible trade arrangements, according to Cricbuzz.

Jaiswal would offer Mumbai another high-quality Indian top-order batter, but the franchise’s immediate priority appears to be strengthening its pace attack, making Arshdeep a particularly attractive target.

Mumbai have also explored options with Kolkata Knight Riders, including a possible arrangement involving fast bowler Harshit Rana and a batter. Kolkata, however, have been reluctant to part with Rana.

Chennai Super Kings’ young batter Ayush Mhatre has also been linked with Mumbai’s trade interest, although Chennai were unwilling to entertain an exchange.

The range of discussions underlines Mumbai’s willingness to consider substantial changes ahead of the new season, even as its pursuit of an established Indian fast bowler remains central to its plans.

IPL retention deadline puts pressure on trade decisions

Punjab’s willingness to consider Arshdeep in an exchange is particularly significant given its investment in the pacer at the IPL 2025 mega auction. The franchise used its Right to Match card to retain him for ₹18 crore (approx. US$1.9 million).

The BCCI has extended the IPL 2027 player retention deadline to November 17, with the mini-auction scheduled for December 16 in Goa.

With the retention deadline approaching, Mumbai’s pursuit of Arshdeep and Punjab’s potential moves for Hardik and Mohsin highlight how both franchises are looking to reshape their squads, with Mumbai prioritising pace-bowling depth and Punjab seeking a new balance of all-round and bowling resources ahead of IPL 2027.
