India reaffirms commitment to Afghanistan
India has reiterated its long-standing commitment to strengthening ties with Afghanistan, with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar announcing a series of new initiatives aimed at deepening bilateral cooperation.
Welcoming Afghan Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi and his delegation to New Delhi on Friday, Jaishankar highlighted the historic connection between the two nations and reaffirmed India’s intent to expand development and diplomatic engagement.
According to ANI, Jaishankar confirmed India’s decision to upgrade its Technical Mission in Kabul to the status of the Embassy of India, signaling a renewed phase in diplomatic relations. He also announced six new development projects in Afghanistan and expressed gratitude for Kabul’s solidarity following the Pahalgam terror attack and its understanding of India’s security sensitivities.
Sports diplomacy at the forefront
Emphasizing the power of sports as a bridge between nations, Jaishankar hailed Afghanistan’s rise in international cricket, describing it as a symbol of resilience and regional cooperation: “Sports is another longstanding connection. The emergence of Afghan cricket talent has been truly impressive. India is glad to deepen its support for Afghan cricket.”
India’s support for Afghan cricket development reflects its broader strategy of fostering sports diplomacy. Over the years, India has hosted Afghan cricket teams and provided infrastructure support, including training facilities and grounds.
Afghanistan’s cricketing rise
Afghanistan’s cricket journey has been remarkable. The team has evolved into one of Asia’s most competitive sides, recording four consecutive ODI series victories in 2024 — defeating Ireland, South Africa, Bangladesh, and Zimbabwe.
However, Afghanistan has yet to secure a win over India in any major international format, with India maintaining an unbeaten record across ODIs, T20Is, and Tests.
Muttaqi’s Visit Marks Diplomatic Milestone
Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi’s trip to India, which began on October 9 and continues until October 16, marks the first high-level Afghan delegation visit to New Delhi since the Taliban’s takeover in August 2021.
As reported by TOLO News, Zia Ahmad Takal, head of public relations at Afghanistan’s Foreign Ministry, stated that the visit aims at “expanding relations between Kabul and New Delhi.”
In a diplomatic gesture, the United Nations Security Council granted a temporary exemption on Muttaqi’s international travel restrictions, enabling his week-long stay in India.
Strengthening Regional Engagement
Jaishankar’s remarks highlight India’s approach to engaging with Afghanistan under the current regime — focusing on humanitarian aid, infrastructure, and cultural exchange – with cricket serving as a positive symbol of cooperation.
