Mississauga, ON – On World Cancer Day, the Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation (PMCF) hosted an exclusive “Curtain Raiser” event at C Banquets in Mississauga, officially launching their newest and most exciting fundraising initiative: Cricket to Conquer Cancer—Canada’s first-ever street cricket fundraiser set to take place on May 31, 2025, at Celebration Square, Mississauga.
The evening was a celebration of community, cricket, and commitment, bringing together community leaders, corporate partners, celebrities, and supporters—all united by a shared mission to Carry the Fire and create brighter tomorrows for those touched by cancer.
A Night of Inspiration and Commitment
Attendees were treated to an evening of inspiration and impact, featuring keynote speeches from Miyo Yamashita, President and CEO of the Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation, who highlighted the urgent need for continued cancer research funding.
Adding to the excitement, international cricket star Carlos Brathwaite made a special guest appearance, rallying attendees to sign up, form teams, and make history by participating in the inaugural Cricket to Conquer Cancer event this May.

One of the key moments of the evening was the introduction of the 2025 Honourary Chairs, including Sara Mazhar, Mehran Shahriar, Reetu Gupta, and Bobby Sahni, Partner & Co-founder, of Ethnicity Matters. Their leadership and advocacy will play a pivotal role in making this initiative a success.
The night also saw a significant corporate sponsorship announcement, as Ethnicity Matters, which helped organize the event, proudly stepped up as a sponsor, encouraging other corporations to join them in supporting this groundbreaking fundraiser.
Looking Ahead to May 31: Cricket to Conquer Cancer
With 80 teams set to compete, Cricket to Conquer Cancer is already 50% sold out—a testament to the overwhelming support for this first-of-its-kind initiative. This co-ed street cricket tournament will bring together players of all skill levels—rookies, ringers, and celebrities alike—each team raising a minimum of $6,000 to fund life-saving cancer research at The Princess Margaret, one of the top five cancer research centers in the world.
Beyond the cricket action, the event will feature live entertainment, food, beverages, and an electric atmosphere, making it a day of both competition and community.
