The Pakistan Super League (PSL) is once again poised to go head-to-head with the Indian Premier League (IPL), with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) confirming that the 11th edition of the tournament will be held in April and May 2026.
PCB finalizes window amid packed international calendar
According to a report by Cricket Pakistan, the PCB has communicated to existing franchises that the April–May window is now official, with a formal announcement expected later in July. The decision follows months of discussions, with an earlier proposed window—December 2025 to January 2026—ultimately ruled out due to franchise contracts and scheduling complexities.
This adjustment comes as Pakistan prepares to host the ICC Champions Trophy in February–March 2025 and the ICC T20 World Cup in early 2026. The reshuffling of the PSL calendar is aimed at navigating these global commitments while preserving the league’s commercial and operational viability.
Franchises demand schedule clarity and pitch improvements
Franchises had strongly advocated for an early schedule confirmation and raised concerns over pitch conditions during PSL 10. They criticised the quality of some surfaces, particularly in Karachi, citing one-sided matches that detracted from the overall competitiveness of the tournament. The PCB has been urged to ensure more balanced, T20-friendly tracks across all venues in the upcoming edition.
Congested international commitments force rescheduling
Pakistan’s domestic and international cricket calendar is heavily congested over the next 12 months, impacting PSL scheduling:
- November 2025: Home series against Sri Lanka (3 ODIs, 3 T20Is)
- February 2026: Australia’s T20I tour of Pakistan
- February-March 2026: ICC T20 World Cup
- Late March–April 2026: Pakistan tour of Bangladesh (2 Tests, 3 ODIs, 3 T20Is)
- April–May 2026: Zimbabwe scheduled to tour Pakistan (3 ODIs, 3 T20Is)
The Zimbabwe series, currently overlapping with the PSL window, is expected to be rescheduled.
Franchise valuation process gains momentum
In parallel, the PCB is moving forward with a new franchise valuation initiative. The advertisement for hiring an independent audit firm has been approved, with the selection process to be completed within 15 days. The appointed firm will be tasked with completing the valuation within one to two months.
This effort is seen as a precursor to league expansion. Discussions have already resumed with interested investors, including foreign parties, and the PCB is expected to accelerate plans for adding new franchises once the valuation process concludes.
PSL aims for stability and growth despite IPL overlap
While the clash with the IPL poses a challenge, the PCB appears committed to maintaining PSL’s momentum, focusing on improving pitch quality, expanding franchise ownership, and securing a stable broadcast window. The April–May scheduling aims to minimize disruption and ensure the league continues to grow, both domestically and globally.
